Re: [Dr_Hargroder] HELP! Still have hives 1 week pre-op! What do you think?

2007-04-30 21:55:06

Hi Jodie,

I am almost 8 months out past my surgery and reading what you have been posting, I remember being nervous myself, I think all of us have been. If you think or just pretty sure it is your nerves, try some positive thinking. I know!!! Sure everyone has preached to you about calming down, but what worked for me was just asking myself, "Ok! What am I sooooo nervous about?" Which the same worry comes in all of our heads is the surgery, recovery and outcome. You need to remember that you are not alone. Many of us have been there and many will to come. I remember being soooo nervous and after the surgery thinking to myself, "What was I sooooo nervous for???" I can't speak for anyone else, but It was a piece of cake for me. Yes! I had my share of little problems, but thats just it, "little" problems, like gas from the surgery, sorness, etc.......

You will be just fine! You need to try working on talking to yourself and calming your nerves. You have a wonderful staff and brillant doctor who " knows what he is doing". Just remember the reason you choose this doctor and hospital and keep that faith. I know it sooo hard to be in your shoes right at this moment and to be worried and/or nervous, that's normal, been there done that! And I too, didn't want everyone telling me to calm down, they weren't getting ready to go through what I was getting ready to do. But, please believe me when I tell you this, it really is easier than you think. You go in they get you ready, you fall asleep, then wake up and thats it! It's complete! You have some soreness, but it's a walk in the park.

So, now you ask your self, " That sounds like a breeze! So silly to get sooo worked up and nervous about." ......Remember, your doctor and his wonderful staff have done this sooo many times and Jodie, they really are great at what they do! So, honey, try to calm down, relax and sail with faith that all will be fine, because it will.

Good luck to you and your new journey in life. This is the biggest and best thing you could ever do for yourself. We all have you in our thoughts and prayers and know without a doubt you will do great!!!

Do you guys think having hives (legs and tourso) is a good reason to
postpone surgery? I have already had a huge fight with my mother who
paid 12K for surgery and then I had to postpone it 2 weeks. It was
scheduled for March 15th and now moved to the 28th. She blamed me for
getting myself "all worked up" and not able to have it on schedule. I
am 95% sure it is just nerves, have seen an allergist (couldn't find
anything definitive) and will see a dermatologist tomorrow.
HOWEVER........the clock is ticking away! Now I'm thinking --come hell
or high water--I'm doing it!!!!!!!!

Hi Bubba,
Thought about you today as I made your recipe again! It is a
favorite! It has the perfect consistancy. Has anyone been able to get
their hands on a good plain cheesecake recipe? I have tried to
convert a few from sugar to splenda, and they don't do well because
sugar adds a lot of volume and moisture. They come out rubbery and
dry. Ah, the quest continues....

Jodi,

I was delighted to talk to you today. You seem so realistic about this surgery/procedure and you are very positive too, even with the setbacks. I am proud of you. It appears I will be out of work for this week too. So, if you want we might get to meet for coffee or something, K?

Stand tall. There are many ups and downs involved. It is different for different people. If you realize it is different with everyone, but still fits in the same catigory as everyone, then you will understand.

Thanks for calling. Stay positive.

I'd love to meet you.\

I was advised today to postpone my surgery due to an
outbreak of hives that seems to have gotten worse
rather than better. My Allergist/Immunologist Dr.
spoke to Dr. Hargroder today and they agreed to
postpone (at least 2 weeks). I think my anxiety is
"doing a number on me"! I don't recall having hives
before but do have other stress related conditions.
Please pray for me and any helpful advice on dealing
with stress and anxiety would be helpful!
Thanks,
Jodie

I'm about to get the sleeve on March 15th and have done quite a bit
of research. There is pretty good info on obesityhelp.com--they
explain different procedure there. Also, a member of the Vertical
Sleeve forum (Nano) put together a frequently asked questions site
(unofficial, but good). I believe it is www.vsgfaq.com. Check it

Re: [Dr_Hargroder] Question?

2007-04-28 21:51:24

Christie,

I had my gastric bypass done 12-13-05 and lost 135 lbs in about 8 months. I have maintained the same weight loss ever since. I now go up and down about 2 lbs but I have stayed the same since about 8 months out. Everyone is a little different. I wouldn't worry too much about slowing down on the loss yet. I was one that was abnormal I guess but I know that every one is different. Call and talk to Dr. Hargroder if you are real worried about it. The staff at Dr. Hargroder's office are great at getting you answers. I have yet to ask a question that they haven't been able to get an answer for. I too had worried that I had done something wrong or was eating wrong. I had simply gotten to my goal / target weight earlier than expected.

Have you changed the way you eat? How about the types of food you eat? Are you keeping your protein intake at between 80-100 grams per day? Not to mention keeping the fat intake at less than 30%. The questions are always going to be the same to start with. You are doing great! You may only need to modify something simple. The new you is here to stay.

Question?

2007-04-28 19:02:25

Hi All,

I have a questions? ... I had my surgery on July 26th, 2006. I am about 130 pounds down and sooo happy, but my question is for the past month, I have stayed at the same weight? Doc Hardgroder said I would not plateau till no earlier than a year past my surgery? I am very active and watch what I eat. Is this normal? I think a little over a month of not loosing with this surgery has got me with concerns? I have about 80 to 90 more to go. I am only on my 71/2 month past my surgery date? Any responses would be great!.....

That is great Jodie.

I would and have put my trust in whatever Dr. Hargroder recommends. He is the best in my book. But I do understand your concerns and I recommend you ask Kristi or Dr. Hargroder. One thing I can tell you for sure is that they do not mind addressing your concerns and they take everyone of them seriously.
Good luck on your surgery.

I finally got my surgery date--March 15th and feel good about that. I
am a little worried though about nausea. At one of my consults a Dr.
at Baylor said they cannot make the stomach really small or it will
cause ongoing nausea--any comments? Dr. H is using a 34 french

Hi Everyone!
Here's my question... I had my surgery July 26th, 2006. Other than
having my Gallbladder out a month 1/2 ago, all seems to be great with
my health. I am now down 130 pounds since my surgery. But, for almost a
month or so, I have stayed at the same weight. I don't weigh myself
every day, maybe once or twice a week. I remember Dr. Hargroder telling
me we don't plateau untill at least our 9 month at the earliest, so my
question is " what's the deal??" I stay pretty active, even more so
now that I am 130 pounds lighter. I have about another 80 to 90 pounds
to lose until I reach my goal weight. I am just starting to get nervous
being I am not loosing. I heard of others stalling for a week or so,
but I do feel this is a bit too long? Does anyone have any suggestions
on what going on and/or been through this as well? Thanks, Christie

RE: [Dr_Hargroder] weight gain/loss

2007-04-27 19:01:21

It's so nice to hear from us "oldies"...LOL

It just confirms what we already know, the surgery doesn't fix the "head" part of our food issues. I weigh myself 4-5 times per day...yes, I know I shouldn't but still do. I had decided (this took me 6 months to decide) that I was going to put back on about 15 pounds starting on Jan. 1. OK, how weird is that? Making a new year's resolution to GAIN weight? Anyway, I thought I'd convinced myself that it would be OK to watch the scale go up a little bit...but after the first 8 pounds gained I freaked out! I took 4 of those 8 pounds back off 'cause it just messed with my head too badly. My new man (Tom [INLINE] ) is trying to help me to be OK with gaining a few...but I'm still very hesitant to gain ANY weight at all. Unfortunately, I have seen too many people put the weight back on after surgery and I am NOT going to be one of those people...period. I'd rather die than be overweight again...sad, but true. I can't ever go back there. So, with that said...I'm working on
myself again...at Tom's suggestion I'm going to try to take very small steps...gain 4 and stay there until I feel comfortable with that freaking NUMBER. It is a numbers game in my head and I've got to play it until I can deal with it. My weight loss, at 3 1/2 years out, is practically non-existent, which is fine. Like I said I need to gain a few not lose more. But, I can lose any time I want so far...when I put on those 8 I took off the 4 within a week. Which just confirms everything I heard/read before surgery...this is A TOOL...that tool can be used at any time...not just up until 18 months like some have thought.

I eat sweets all the time now, wish I'd never ever gone there...if you are a NEWBIE...don't ever go there...the sugar monster has grabbed a hold of me just like before surgery. I was basically sugar free for over 2 years after my surgery!

Gotta get back to work...

Ive gained 10 lbs and know that it is from eating sweets and hibernating. I crave sweets all the time. Thank God that I gave up chocolate for lent or I might gain even more weight. My family says that I look better now than I did 10 lbs ago because I look healthier. My clothes feel a little tighter but I can still wear my size 6 jeans and size 4 dresses. I just dont want to defeat all my hard work and start gaining my weight back. I know I need to exercise but I just cant get motivated. I too weigh my self every day even though I know that I shouldnt. Im hoping that now that the weather is starting to warm up a little that I will get outside and exercise.

Re: [Dr_Hargroder] Nutritional issues

2007-04-26 18:34:55

Jodie...just my two cents...

I had RNY on July 31, 2003. I weighed 330 and now weigh between 145-150 (I'm almost 6 feet tall). I didn't have any complications or problems due to my surgery. As we used to say at NeWeigh...I'd do it again...on the kitchen table with a spoon and a flashlight! Now, with that said...I AM concerned about long term implications. I know two women who are 5 and 7 years out and they have had SERIOUS nutritional issues starting at about 4-5 years out. They didn't keep up with the protein supplementing or vitamins or anything else we are told to do. I guess malnutrition takes a while to "kick in"...? I don't know. I need to do some more research on the long term effects that's for sure. The health issues I have had in the last year (ulcer and internal hernia) were not directly related to my RNY.

Good luck with the sleeve...I know they've been doing them in other parts of the country with good results.

GA
Jodie <jehebert354@...

Hi Bubba--thanks for the support. The procedure I want is not the
band but a new practice/procedure called Vertical Sleeve
Gastrectomy. It is kind of in-between the band and RNY. I got the
distinct impression Dr. Hargroder does not like the band much due to
poor results. Sounds like you have had good results and not many
problems--congrats. I just read a very concerning email about a RNY
patient posted today...did you see it? Oh my, that does make me wary
of surgery. Did you have any problems after surgery?

I'm glad you are recovering from your nutrition issues and your post
has helped me to know I have made the right decision by going with
the less invasive vertical sleeve--new procedure. I was wondering
how this product is different than other protein drinks ect. Also,
for you is it the only way you are able to get enough protein? I am
still learning and not had surgery yet, but about to schedule it.

Nutrition issues

2007-04-26 07:28:43

Hey guys, it has been awhile since I have posted... but I had to get
on here and share this. I had my RYN on May 16, 2005, and to date I
have lost 172 lbs and am 15 lbs shy of my goal weight. I have had
many problems along the way, regretting most of the time, having had
the surgery. I have suffered greatly with mal-nutrition. I had
found it almost impossible to get protein down and keep it down.
Had many wonderful suggestions from people on here, but nothing
worked for me. I have souhgt out several nutritionalist, for advice
& help... but nothing seemed to be my answer. In Oct. of last year,
my stomach ruptured out, and herniated. I had to have emergency
surgery that left me in hospital for 11 days, on iv only (no food)
for 9 days. My body went to hell... I lost so much muscle it was
terrible. My sister cried when she came to see me. I looked and
felt horrible. Well then I found this company called Isagenix, and
studied their products and tried it. WOW!!! That is how I feel...
after all this time I feel like me again! I have so much energy,
and know that everyday I am not only getting the best nutrition...
but all my protein, and I feel great! I became a distributor so I
can buy my products wholesale as well as share these incredible
products with others that may be suffering as well. Please check
out the web site & let me know if I can answer any questions. God
bless ~ www.reneehendricks.isagenics.com

Hey Jodie,
I'm just like you and I have ALWAYS put everyone before myself,
except for this surgery. Some of my family was all for it and some
weren't. I had gastric bypass August 3, 2006 and I have lost 92 lbs.
almost to 100lbs. I feel great and this is the best thing I have
ever done for myself and everyone around me. You can talk to Christy
at Dr. H's office, but if you have the surgery on 3/5 you should be
feeling fine for 3/24 and will have dropped a few pounds too. Check
with Christy she can answer all your questions and girl go get it
done. Time to start your life. I like to call it the day I started
to live. Good Luck - Dr. Hargroder will never lead you wrong. He
has been a life saver for many people.
Good luck

Re: [Dr_Hargroder] Anxious about setting a date

2007-04-25 08:23:06

Jodie, Congratulations on making it this far. My name
is Carolyn and I had RNY July 17, 2006. Started at
400 pounds being only 5' 2". I am now still 5' 2",
LOL, but 265 pounds. It was the biggest decision and
the biggest gift I could give myself - my life back.
Most of us will all tell you the same story, just
different individual versions.
The ultimate decision has to be what is best for you.
Do you really want to have the surgery without family
support around? Can you emotionally wait another four
weeks to have one of the most gratifying experiences
of your life? For me I just put it in the good Lord's
hands and of course in Dr. Hargroder's also and said
let's do it! The anxiety of waiting could not have
been greater. I concentrated on the end results and
then gave it all to God. Don't want to preach so I
will close and just say that is what worked for me.
Good luck with the decision and please drop a note if
you have any questions or need to talk to someone. My
number is 985-868-5298.

Anxious about setting a date

2007-04-25 04:38:04

I finally decided which procedure now I have to set a date! I am a
cash pay person who is wanting the sleeve gastrectomy. 3 out of 4 Dr.
first told me to go with a RNY, but finally I asked Dr. Hargroder--"if
it was you who weighed almost 300 pounds and in my situation--right her
and now--what would you do?". He told me he would go with the sleeve
for 2 reasons: less operative risk and fact that I was cash pay.
Being cash pay means that if there was a complication after surgery my
insurance would still not pay! Thank god I asked. Now that is decided-
seems everyone wants me to wait for one reason or another--my college
reunion on March 24 (Mobile, Al). My niece's birthday on March the
10th (Houston, TX). My sis wants to be here but can't come before
that. I'm thinking--this is part of my problem--putting everyone
else's needs first! The Dr. can do it as early as March 5th and I feel
I'm ready. Really I can't stand the thought of waiting another 4 weeks
for the reunion--which is out of town and haven't been to one in 10
years. I am making myself crazy trying to do everything and make
everyone else happy! I was wondering how people deal with anxiety
before and especially after surgery--my main coping technique is to
eat!! :(

Post op...not wanting to eat!

2007-04-24 14:47:51

Hi everyone, my name is Meredith. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 8,
2007 and I am having a hard time eating. Food is DISGUSTING!!!! I
started on the soft foods 1 week ago and feel like there aren't anymore
options. I have tried the tuna, chicken, and lots of other soft foods
that are listed on the sheets but find it all pretty much is nasty.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I have been eating yogurt, baked
fish, cheese, and a little peanut butter but this is all and it's
getting very old very quickly. I am also tired of protein shakes, and
the new whey protein...any suggestions on how to get 80 grams of
protein a day in other ways?
Thank you!

Hair Loss after Surgery

Hello Everyone!
My Name is Christie. I had my Gastric Bypass surgery on July 26th, so I
am almost 6 months out. My question and concern is hair loss! The first
few months I had no problem with my hair. I didn't have the thickest
hair in the world, but it was nice and thick. Now, for the past 2 or 3
months, I am noticing more and more, when I was my hair and brush my
hair, little by little, my hair is thinning and It really has me
worried. I am trying my best to get all of the 80 grams of protein or
more in a day, but you all know that is so hard. I make sure I have a
32 ounce Glaidator Smoothie and take all my vitamins. I am even taking
a vitamin called Biotin, for hair, skin and nails....... I am just
concerned and worried by the next few months I will be bald!!! Has
anyone had or have the same problem I do? Has anyone lost all there
hair from the surgery?? Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for
me?....Thanks alot,......Christie

Cravings after surgery

2007-04-24 03:50:01

Hello everyone,
My name is Kelly. I had my gastric bypass surgery on January
11th of this year. I'm on the 2nd phase of my diet. I JUST started it
yesterday. I crave everything I see. I'm sure this is normal due to
the habits of my pre-op lifestyle. My question is, do they go away? Or
is there anything I can do to make them go away. It's easy to crave
things you see your parents eating or see on tv when you're living off
of egg whites and low fat cheese. Any suggestions?

Patients who have had bariatric surgery need to take

Newswise - Patients who have had bariatric surgery
need to take special steps to make sure they are
absorbing their medications and nutrients, according
to a study published today in the October 1, 2006,
edition of the American Journal of Health-System
Pharmacy (Am J Health Syst Pharm 2006 63: 1852-1857).
Authors April D. Miller, Pharm.D, of University of Kentucky HealthCare, and Kelly M. Smith, Pharm.D., of
University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, examined
previously published literature to assess potential
problems that bariatric surgery patients may have with
absorption of mediations and nutrients.
The authors focus on Roux-en-Y (pronounced
"rue-on-why" ) gastric bypass, which is the type of
bariatric surgery most often performed in the United States. This form of gastric bypass surgery is
associated with more absorption problems than other
procedures because it combines techniques that
restrict the amount of food passing through the
stomach and impair the ability of the small intestines
to absorb nutrients.
This combination of approaches creates the need for
special considerations to help patients get the best
results from their medications, according to Miller
and Smith. "Both the smaller stomach size and the
decreased absorption ability of the small intestines
can mean that medications may not work as intended,"
said Smith. "It's important for physicians and
pharmacists to be aware of these patients' special
needs in order to make the best choices about
appropriate medications. "
Extended-release and delayed-release medications may
not work properly because of the shortened small
intestine, explains Smith. She adds that some of the
necessary changes could be as simple as prescribing a
liquid medication, which is more easily absorbed than
a tablet or capsule, and using immediate-release
formulations. The study also notes that patients could
benefit from medications that are administered with
patches worn on the skin, injection, suppositories, or
nasal spray.
Nutrient deficiencies may also be a problem, including
deficiencies of calcium and fat-soluble vitamins (A,
D, E, and K). Patients are also at higher risk for
developing anemia because of deficiencies in iron,
vitamin B12 and folate. "After bariatric surgery, all
patients should take a daily multivitamin and calcium
supplementation - preferably in a powder or liquid
form to enhance absorption," said Miller. "Monthly B12
injections and early bone density testing should also
be considered."

***PLEASE NOTE THE CONTENT OF THIS NEWSLETTER IS WHAT IS DISCUSSED
IN THE SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS. IF ANYTHING CONTRADICTS WHAT YOUR
PHYSICIAN OR DIETICAN RECOMMENDS FOLLOW THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS. THIS
SUPPORT GROUP AND NEWSLETTER ARE NOT JUST FOR THE PATIENTS OF DR.
BELLANGER OR DR. HARGRODER, THEY ARE FOR ANYONE THAT HAS HAD WLS
(WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY) OF ANY KIND, IS CONSIDERING WLS, OR JUST WANTS
TO SUPPORT SOMEONE WHO IS CONSIDERING WLS.
Weight Loss Surgery Support Group Meetings are held every Wednesday
at the following location:
9094 Perkins Road
Baton Rouge, LA, 70810
For more information about the WLS Support Group Meetings you can
contact either Sue or Christi at 225-819-0983
I would like to recognize and thank both Dr. Bellanger and Dr.
Hargroder for the support and encouragement that they provide for
their patients, both before and after surgery. They also provide
the meeting place for the WLS Support Group Meetings, and the
support group leaders are members of their staff.
Topics Covered at the Meeting
Sue was the facilitator of this meeting and it was an open
discussion focusing on how we handled the Thanksgiving Holidays.
Discussion, Questions and Answers:
Q: How did we handle Thanksgiving?
A: (Dominica) I made 2 sugar-free deserts Banana pudding and
Mississippi Mud and you couldn't tell the difference, in fact the
sugar-free desserts even tasted better than the "regular" desserts.
Some general recommendations and comments included:
Using extracts to flavor foods and substituting sugar-free
or fat-free Kool-whip for regular Kool-whip.
I ate more Thanksgiving Day than I had been eating since my
surgery, but I still ate a lot less than I would have before surgery.
Remember it is okay to leave food on your plate.
I used what I call "The Taste Diet" a little bit of
everything, and I was satisfied without overdoing it.
We make "Christmas Spaghetti" and I plan on making
the "regular" spaghetti sauce with sugar then one with splenda.
In place of "regular" pasta you can try whole wheat pasta,
eggplant, spaghetti squash or even yellow or zucchini squash.
A good substitute for regular milk in recipes is evaporated
(canned) skim milk.
Q: Why are we supposed to avoid orange juice after surgery?
A: There is a lot of acid in orange juice, and as in any fruit
juice there's a lot of natural sugar in fruit and fruit juice.
If you are going to drink fruit juice make sure they have no
added sugar and you may need to mix the juice half and half with
water to cut the natural sugars.
Instead of fruit juice a better choice would be the drink
mixes such as: Crystal Light or the Great Value Brandthere is a
large variety of drink mix brands and flavors available. There is a
new flavor of the Great Value drink mix availablePink Grapefruit.
The cash price of the "sleeve" is the same price as the lap
band surgery.
FYI: Blue Cross/Blue Shield
Q: Why is it so hard to get insurance companies to cover the WLS?
A: Some companies still consider these surgeries "cosmetic"
surgeries.
A: The numbers of obese people are rising everyday and insurance
companies are afraid if they start covering the surgeries there will
be a large number of people who will want the surgery. If they start
covering it and that would mean the insurance companies would be
putting out a lot of money.
Q: My insurance company has paid out approximately $40,000.00 for
my surgery. Wouldn't it make more sense for the insurance companies
to stop fighting the coverage issue and just pay the cash price for
gastric bypass which is about $19,000.00, or $12,000.00 for lap band
or the "sleeve"?
A: They won't do it, they are afraid of the potential numbers of
people who would want the surgeries if they started covering it.
Blue Cross Federal will start covering the band in January
2007.
Q: In the first 2 weeks after surgery I lost 28lbs, but in the 3rd
week I gained 4 lbs and I've been having unable to drink water, so I
don't think it's a fluid issuewhat could be going on
A: It really has to be a fluid issue because there is no way you
have been able to consume enough calories to gain weight.
A: The medications you take might be affecting the amount of fluid
you retainso it probably is something to do with fluid. Just keep
doing what you are supposed to do and the weight will come off.
A: Be sure to get your proteins in if you don't it will slow down
your weight loss.
Q: What are some proteins that I can eat?
A: Some good proteins to try at 4 weeks out of surgery are cottage
cheese, eggs, string cheese, or protein drinkstry different ones
until you find one you like. You can go to places like Smoothie
King, Vitality Nutrisport, Planet Nutrition, etcand try different
protein drinks until you find one you like
I'm dealing with the "head thing" with the surgeryI have it in my
head that this just isn't going to work for me, that I'm going to be
the one it doesn't work on.
Q: How much weight have you lost?
A: 45lbs, but I'm sure it's going to stop
A: Just keep doing what you are supposed to dothe
weight will come off

HELP!!! Taking a cold

2007-04-21 20:56:55

Hi everyone. Haven't checked in lately...Today I am five weeks out and
have lost 44lbs. Holy cow. Who would have ever thought it? I still
have not gotten sick from anything. I guess they knew what they were
talking about when they came up with the diet phases. I feel so
fantastic. This is the best decision I have ever made. Now, I need
your experience though... I think I am taking a cold. I have a sore
throat, it hurts to swallow and I have a headache. My pharmacy friend
says to take Airborne (liquid) and Zicam swabs in the nose. Any
advice? I bought chewable Tylenol for the headache but haven't taken it
yet. She says the Airborne tastes like Tang which to me screams SUGAR
but I haven't read the label yet. You guys always come through with
great wisdom so here I am again asking for advice. I have a Redskins
game to go to Sunday and I don't want to be sick. Thanks in advance,
Donna Hastings

Re: Back Pain

2007-04-21 20:46:47

The same thing happened to me and I talked to my regular doctor and Dr
Hargroder and they both told me I had a kidney stone. I took some pain
medicine and it seemed to go away and so my regular doctor thought it
was solved, but a couple of weeks later the pain returned, so I went to
a urologist and I had 3 different kidney infections. To make a long
story short, after surgery we don't drink as much as before and we are
prone to kidney stones and kidney infections. Go to an urologist and
have it checked out. I am feeling much better. I didn't know I had
the bad infections and it had affected my recovery. I'm feeling great
now.

Hi everyone...Happy Holidays to you all....I am about a little over 4
months past my surgery, and have a questions....for the past 4 to 6
weeks, my back has been killing me. Has anyone else had or have this
problem. Some people say it might be my weight ajusting to my body and
making my back hurt, but you know everyone has an opionion..please
respond...Thanks, Christie

the holidays

2007-04-21 11:22:29

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a great Christmas
season. I know we discussed (in the support meetings) the holiday
foods and how they will affect us, this is just a reminder to those who
weren't there. We may not be able to eat some of everything on the
table and especially the desert table, but God and the wonderful Doc's
have given us another chance to see more holidays and enjoy them so
much more. While the others are passed out and napping from over
eating we can go for a walk and feel great. I started my life over
8/3/06 and I thank God daily for this new life. Enjoy the holidays.

Just after surgery

2007-04-21 03:31:14

Donna,
I have not had baby food during any part of my treatment - and did not see any
mention of baby food in the nutrition paperwork. As a matter of fact if you
look at the labels on baby food it is not all that healthy!
I did not have any scabs on my incisions. They were all just little purple
marks and that was it.
Keep on keeping on - you are doing great - it is much better to ask the
questions than make yourself crazy with worry and wonder!
Have a great weekend and Happy Thanksgiving.
Danielle

Just after surgery

Re: baby food...there's not alot of protein in any baby food. If you want to eat it (yuck! LOL) it would be just because it was a soft food, easy to get down. I tried them early on, they taste yucky, poor babies! LOL. Re: incisions...mine formed scabs underneath those strips, I remember those healing really quickly, but that's probably one of those things that is an individual thing. Sounds like you're doing everything right...don't rush the phases of eating, take it slow and be patient. I'm glad to hear you're having an easy time of it! What a blessing that is!!!!!

Good luck,

Georgia
Donna Hastings <donnaandscott@...

Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions. I feel better. I
have a ton of questions and don't really know who to ask. Like, am I
supposed to be forming scabs on my incisions or do they heal under the
surgi strips without scabs? And I remember someone mentioning baby
food but I don't see any mention of it in my nutrition paperwork. Is
that phase 2 or phase 3? Do you eat it for the protein? Still
appreciate any responses. Thanks, Donna H.

Donna,

I felt really good after surgery like you do. I sort of felt like I was abnormal because I felt so NORMAL! Basically, when you are taking in liquids, I think they are just running through, so you are not getting a really full sensation like you will once you begin on more solid things. Don't worry, you are totally normal. And be glad that you feel great. I never had any trouble with nausea (well, all except for that rocky day at sea on a cruiseship one time! LOL).

Linda
Donna Hastings <donnaandscott@...

I know this is going to sound strange, but I am one week out from
surgery and I am afraid everything is going too well. I have been
following the clear liquid diet for the most part. (The New Whey
protein goop is gross and I have missed a dose or two) I am sticking to
the broth, gelatin and popscicles. Still afraid I am not drinking
enough, but haven't been able to get in touch with the nutritionist. I
was told not to overdo on the water because I didn't want to stretch my
pouch early on. But, everyone says "you'll know when you're full
because you'll vomit if you eat too much." Nothing has made me
nauseous. I have not vomited. I have not felt like I have a "golf ball
in my chest". Nothing. I can eat more than 2 ounce of jello at a
time. I can eat a whole popscicle. I don't feel sick when I eat the
whole 3oz of broth. I look at food and feel like "I could eat that"
even though it is solid and I know better than to try. It's just hard
to stick to the clear liquids when I feel so good and haven't been sick
at all. I don't feel hungry of course, but foods still smell good and
I feel like I want to eat, but I AM going to stick to the diet. (Well,
I did cheat once and sipped about 4oz of a Diabetic Vanilla shake.) Am
I out of the norm or do most people have so little complications? Any
replies will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Donna H.

[Dr_Hargroder] typos/corrections

2007-04-18 22:07:30

Sorry gang, I was so tired when I wrote the past letter.

Basically, I had an accident at school.

I went to the doctor and he gave me some mild time released pain meds.

It made me sick.

So, I went to the orthopedic.

He is the one who discovered all the stool and gas in my intestines through x-rays.

He was amazed because he had never seen this much in anybody before. We thoutht t was funny at the time, but after really thinking about it and some past stories, I grew alarmed. I mean, if there was enough there to shock the doctor, then something has to be done. I am grateful that I get another x-ray in two weeks. Until then I will be taking a lot of fiber and water.

Okay, have to run off to work again.

I do NOT have this child in my class any longer, by the way and through this it has helped me and it has helped this child and her mother. I just wanted to share this information about the tummy to make everyone aware that YES, protein is VERY important, but so is fiber, so please, please, please, everyone, listen to your own body and realized that no one is an expert on this subject yet, so we have to be proactive and also kind of demanding sometimes with our own doctors/insurance.

Have a great day.

Oh, and this one child has been moved from my class. Let me know if there is anyone who would like to be a para which is the new word for teacher's aid.

Have a blessed day!
Cherie

[Dr_Hargroder] Important information

I myself am very grateful you took the time to share that information with us.I
wish you and everyone much success in ur journey and also i want to wish u all a
wonderful, blessed "holy day" season!I hope all ur x-rays turn out normal.Take
care all!

Re: [Dr_Hargroder] Important information

2007-04-18 03:01:07

Hello gang. I am not sure of how many of you are newbies, oldies and just good ole' buddies.

However, I too, hand gastric bypass surgery. I did have an experience or two, like everyone, but all in all, it has been a life saving journey for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, here is the news that is important.

I hear about it.
How come I never do anything for myself about it?
We need more information.

We do.

So far I have been seen by a pain med doctor. We couldn't realize how things weren't working. So, he decided that even though it was suppose to stay in my body for 24 hours, I would take half in the morning and half at night. It worked. So, we are different.

Also, I am an ESS teacher who got the doo doo beat out of myself. Out of this caused doctor's visits. So, I want to say that I had to get exrays. Guess what? My back is one of the few that has an extra vertibra (sp?), which means more pain. Oh, I can deal with that. There is other stuff going on, but this is what relates to US as a GBS group.

Doctors don't know near enough. That is why we should pay Georgia to go out learn and teach others the TRUTH about this stuff... we all know she would be great at it.

I had to have x-rays. We found out that I (interesting one here) have an extra vertabrae bone. But, he was amazed at the fact that I could hold so much stool and gas in my intestines or in anyone's like mine. He was amazed and we laughed it off.

So, we left each other then the light went off. What if this was the beginning of an impaction. So, I did what I was told to do and will go to therapy for two weeks and then I will go back for a new exray and see if I need to check with Dr. Hargroder.

So, people, go ahead and have those types of check ups. This can only save your life.

Proactive!

Hi girls and guys
Back home from hospital, had just about every part of my body scanned. The
brain scan is clear, thank goodness ~ that was my biggest worry. Likewise all
major organs are clear, was very worried about my liver too but it's good. Small
nodule seen on one kidney but to be reviewed again when onc is back from New
York where he is delivering a conference
The Ct showed disease progression again, more sites in the spine and ribs. I
am now resistant to letrozole, in fact all the A Is so need to go down the
radiotherapy route again then chemo which I have never had before so all rather
daunting. After almost 11 years, struggling with this disease, yet, each
progression I have viewed as 'par for the course' Somehow this time to
progression (TTP) is worrying me more, probably because TTP has been only 6
months, all the others have demonstrated TTP as over a year. Over two once.
Bone scan report yet to surface but done at a different hopsital so delayed.
But my tumour burden now reaches in excess of 50 bony sites.
One interesting point is that my tumour markers were down again so this really
demonstrates how UNreliable they are.
I have been given a slightly different opiate which is in the main keeping me
pain free but because the sites are forming a band around just above waist level
I tire easily with back and front ache as well as the gnawing bone cancer pain.
I do a few things round the house for about half an hour then rest for an hour,
it's the only way I can keep going.
I suspect I have now entered a more serious phase, one where my general
health is failing. My weight has just fallen off me too and my muscles have lost
tone, consequently I am rather, no very, weak. Now realise that many hopes and
dreams will only ever be just that. My ideas of travelling to St Petersberg in
Russia to see the Imperial Palace, to China to see the terracotta army, go back
to Miami to see friends, likewise Canmore in Canada are really out of the
question. I simply couldn't do the journey to the airport now never mind the
flight.
Thank goodness for DVDs email, digital cameras etc. where I can at least see
it all.
My mood is still quite low but my doc agreed anti depressants weren't the best
idea, rather she thought I need small achievements in my daily life to lift the
level, If I can get out of the really intense pain and begin to dress myself,
shower, get my own meals again then I will be better off. So first notch on my
gun belt was dressing myself this morning, then bending to put washing into the
machine and getting my own breakfast even though I rested in between. Shower
later ~ have just acquired a shower seat but will shower when someone else is in
the house, just in case....
Yes it is a rough time for me at the moment physically and mentally and I need
to get a good treatment plan under way which will be planned in the next few
days and I will have some options next week when I see the onc.
In the meantime many thanks for all the kind and very thoughtful messages you
have posted, too numerous to mention except for Jan K and Judy, bless you. You
have such a way with words, so touching, so genuine, if only we could meet but
alas..........

HI! I never knew that anyone posted highlights from your support
group meetings! I would LOVE to recieve those notes. I am in TN, and
have no one here as support. (Well, no one who knows what it's all
about, and what we go through.) I am about 6 days shy of 3 months
post-op, and I have lost 54 lbs. I'm thinking this is a little slow,
but I'm definately feeling healthier and starting to have a better
shape now. Anyway, please add me to the list. :)
Thanks, Amy Williams
P.S. Does anyone here use the "Roadside Lemondade" Syntrax Nectar

one serving. If anyone knows they can use it, I would be willing to
sell it to you for $10 - shipped and all. It has a long date and, tho
opened recently, would be a great deal for someone who actually likes
it. Just email me at kickbackfan@..., if you are interested.
Thanks!
Be Blessed!

Donna,

Just keep sipping your liguids on a continuous basis right now. Don't get bogged down with how many ounces, just keep sipping. As far as broth goes, it really is just liquid, too. Also, jello, popsicles, etc. They mean solids and liquids together.

I still follow the "rule" of not eating and drinking at the same time (3 years out). It is hard only after lunch, when I really want that cup of joe, and I need to wait. But I know it will be to my benefit to do it the right way.

I would also like to get the newsletter. I did not know about it either!

Also, I am sure I will have a million questions. I am only a few days
out and already am puzzled by the water thing. I heard that I was
going to have to fight to get in at least 64oz of water a day, but then
I was told not to overdo. Just drink 1-2oz an hour. If that is all I
drink for the entire 24 hour day...that's only 48ozs. How do I get in
the 64? I feel thirsty alot and would like to drink small amounts
constantly, but am so afraid of overdoing or doing something wrong.
Also, I am in the clear liquid phase and all I keep remembering is no
eating and drinking at the same time. But in the hospital, I remember
them bringing me crystal light and chicken broth at the same time. Is
chicken broth technically eating? It's confusing. I can call the
nutritionist on Monday, but until then, I just keep wondering if I am
doing anything wrong. Oh well, hope not. I feel fine so far.

Hi everyone. Donna Hastings checking back in. Today is 11/11/06. I
had my surgery on 11/08/06. I am back home in Alabama and all is
well. Thanks to all of you for the prayers and well wishes. It
worked. I had a fantastic experience. The entire staff was wonderful.
Dr. Hargroder is amazing and so talented. Can you imagine being able
to do what he does through just those little bitty holes? Not me. I am
blessed to have found him. I can't wait to start sending in after
pictures. I told them they would be sick of seeing my after pictures,
but they assured me there was no way. I can believe it. Everyone
seems to genuinely care about you from the minute you get there and it
doesn't end just because you leave. I must have heard 100 times "we're
just a phone call away if you need us." That makes me feel good. So,
now I will be asking advice from all of you success stories...be
prepared. Thanks again for everything.

Way to go Linda. I am so proud of you and very happy for you. I love the way you worded your testimonial. I too can appreciate those things (well all except the way your husbands' arms fit around me LOL). Keep on keeping on.

Now just my thoughts on how people as you say "looked past you". It amazes me how shallow people can be. They treat you so much differently when you are smaller. Our society is to busy looking at appearances and trying to "judge books by the cover", so to speak, rather than enjoy the book. If only they could have gotten past their stupidity and taken the time to get to know, they would have found out that you are the same sweet person then as you are right now. Ok I'll stop. I am sounding like Dr. Phil.

Anyway I for one am glad I have had the pleasure to get to know you. You are truly a sweetheart and I love you for it.

Pardon me as I ramble on .........
A little over three years ago I embarked on a journey, not quite
knowing where it would take me, but I did know that it had to start
with that first little step. And so, undergoing gastric bypass
surgery has been my journey of a thousand steps. This trek has
taught me new things about myself each and every day.
I love how I can go into any darn store in the mall (except Lane
Bryant, hee hee!) and pull something off the rack and have it fit. I
love looking in the mirror, sashaying around, and liking what I see.
I love how I can move easily and gracefully. I love how a bracelet
drapes femininely across my wrist, and how my hand looks like a
woman's, and not a dimpled baby's hand. I love that I have delicate
collar bones and a WAIST. I love hearing someone say, "you look
fabulous, you with your tiny self!" and know that they really mean
it. I love being able to cross my legs without having to lean
sideways to accomplish it. I love how my husband's arms encircle me
with room to spare, and how my 8 year old grandson can give me a
piggy back ride. I love that I am more VISIBLE - people notice me
when they looked past me before, and that I am more INVISIBLE -
because now I am not that fat woman, but just another face in the
crowd. I love the reality that I am in the best health and shape of
my life, and it is not selfish to remember that it is MY time to
really live my life as fully as possible, and be thankful for every
day of it.

Re: New patient: Out of town

2007-04-10 11:57:10

Hi Donna! Congratulations on making this decision. I had my surgery on 9-17.. two months ago. I have lost 42 lbs. I feel a lot better. Anyway, I drove down from TN - so I had an 8 hour drive. I stayed 2 nights in the hospital, but I had to stay at a hotel for the 3d night, so I could go back for bloodwork the next morning. I didn't have insurance that covered the surgery or the hospital, otherwise I was welcome to stay there.. but I didn't want to rack up several hundreds of dollars difference just to stay in the hospital on that last night. (Hotel was cheaper!) I had a slight internal bleed, and that is why I had to go for the bloodwork once more before I went home. I was told to stop once an hour and get out and walk around for 10 mins or so, to keep the blood circulating. I pray your surgery goes well, and without complications. They are SOO good at Vista. I just loved them all. You will be well taken care of; so even tho I know you are a little bit anxious - just know
that you are in good hands. Take care and keep in touch.

Hey Donna,
Congratulations on your surgery date. My name is
Carolyn and I had Gastric Roux NY bypass on July 17.
I spent two nights at the hospital and on the third
day was discharged around 1:30PM that afternoon. I
rode home for a one and half hour trip. They will
give you instructions about how long to sit before you
need to stop and walk around the vehicle to prevent
any blood clots from developing in your legs while you
are riding home. They have lots of printed
instructions for you to guide you after the surgery.
Of course, barring any complications the usual stay is
two to three days after bypass surgery of my kind.
Some people who have lap band surgery go home in one
or two days. Just ask the girls in the office for
their thoughts. They are there to help in anyway they
can. They are the best at helping us along our way.
God bless and again good luck, If I can do anything or
you just want to chat, drop me an email.
Take care,
Carolyn

Hello to you all. I've only posted once before and I'm sort of a

mastectomy 4 weeks ago. I am starting my treatments next week. I will
have 6 treatments, 1 every three weeks. I'm so scared. I've never
taken a lot of drugs and I have a bag of 6 new prescriptions. My life
won't be the same. I'm trying not to be afraid. I want to be a
survivor too. I wonder if any of you know anything about Neulasta? My
insurance company will not cover it. Have any of you had it? I would
like your thoughts, your advice, your friendship and your prayers.
They are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.....Donna

Re: has anyone in he group had the lap band lapband?

I had the gastric bypass with Dr Hargroder (8/3/06 - 51lb loss) and he
is an excellent doctor. I have met Dr. Ballanger since surgery because
the doc's take turns coming to the support group and answering
questions for an hour and he is an excellent surgeon also. I asked
every question I could before I had surgery and one of which was "have
you lost any patients?" the answer is NO - when there is a complication
(and sometimes there are) both doctors are right there to do whatever
needs to be done!!!!! Good luck!!!

Some of you may have heard about the deaths of the Boy Scout leaders from
Alaska. They were at the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Virginia. The Alaska
contingent has about 80 Boy Scouts at Jamboree. It is probable most or maybe all
of the Alaskan scouts saw the deaths.
My son is there with a contingent of scouts from Oklahoma. He's okay, as far as
I know.
Please keep all the scouts and leaders in your thoughts as they continue through

Thank you.

Danielle,

Those words of encouragement were so beautiful, and meaningful not only to the new ones, but also to us that are further along in our journey. I am sure we all have had those feelings of not being good enough or comparing ourselves to others. I sure have! But reflecting on how far I have come, and how healthy I am, and how much better I look and feel brings it all home. Thanks for that "shot in the arm"!

PS: I have to go Tuesday for a small surgery to remove some scar tissue in my left breast (from the breast lift I had in March). Even though it is a minor thing, and I will only be sedated instead of put to sleep, I am very, very apprehensive. More so than with the big surgeries I have had. I guess I would rather be KNOCKED OUT! Anyway, everybody please keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

Linda Brooks
Evelyn,
I got to thinking about it yesterday and the fact that we have not met in person could make my e-mail seem very strange to you I am sure. I was just joking about shaking the student worker - my own attempt at new age humor I guess. I wanted to clear that up for sure!
Now, to my message for you today. At group last night we talked about the importance of not comparing ourselves to other people. It is so easy to get trapped in that comparison thing and judging ourselves as not good enough, etc. So with that that I encourage you to celebrate your wonderful success in the present moment. It is the gift you give yourself right now. Your are awesome and don't forget it!
Have a great day!

could make my e-mail seem very strange to you I am sure. I was just joking
about shaking the student worker - my own attempt at new age humor I guess. I
wanted to clear that up for sure!
Now, to my message for you today. At group last night we talked about the
importance of not comparing ourselves to other people. It is so easy to get
trapped in that comparison thing and judging ourselves as not good enough, etc.
So with that that I encourage you to celebrate your wonderful success in the
present moment. It is the gift you give yourself right now. Your are awesome
and don't forget it!
Have a great day!
Danielle
