oops! Angela

2007-07-31 22:13:23

I accidently sent before I was done! :-)
I am a 3b survivor but for almost a year they were telling me that a tumor in
my left femur "could be" stage 4. I was in the middle of chemo and did not
want to stop my treatment so I hung in limbo.
I would have had to stop chemo in order to have the bone biopsy and I was on
my 4th treatment when it was discovered. AND the biopsy would take 3 MONTHS to
heal. So I opted for limbo. :-)
Now, because I STILL do not want to do the biopsy they tell me "it" is dead.
No activity and until it makes a move I'm going to wait.
Just in case you were wondering why I do not want the bone biopsy.
:-)
I have 2 toddlers (plus 3 more older in the home) I would be on crutches for
three months and it also is supposed to be quite painful. I went to a world
reknowned doctor/bone cancer specialist that tells me it does not have the
characteristics of bone or breat cancer. So, I'm counting on him being
correct.
I may change my mind at my next test but for now I'm so sick to death of all
of this I just want to get back to my life.
Besides the femur I am clean throughout as of my test last week! YAY!
Well, that was probably more than you want to hear. :-0
Take care and PLEASE feel free to let loose in here. We deserve the break!
love & hugs!

So this weekend a bunch of women friends of mine got together to
exchange costume jewelry. We all met at one house and brought all our
jewelry we no longer use and then through a process took home anything
from others that we liked. It was fun, but the reason I am writing
this is that we were required to bring something to eat that would
feed 8 people. I thought, oh no, this will be a mess for me. I
realized that all I had to do was bring something I could eat and that
I really like. So I made roll-ups. I made three kinds. What they
are is a slice of lunchmeat spread with cream cheese and a flavoring,
then rolled up, sliced into 3 pieces and skewered with a toothpick. I
did roast beef with horseradish cream cheese, ham with crushed
pineapple cream cheese, and lebonan bologna with green olive cream
cheese. The last may be an eastern food, I don't know if it is country-
wide. It went over so well, that I could ignore the cherry covered
cheesecake, the brownies (which my best friend made), and the toffee
bars. Everyone asked for the recipe. There was also shrimp and
cocktail sauce so I had it made. Just thought I might give you two
ideas for a fun get together.

The less often you eat the more you are going to drag down your metabolism. If
you haven't had a BM in a week I would suspect that is the issue more than the
schedule of your eating. You're doing everything right. This nasty plateau
will pass. I know that's not what you want to hear, but it's the truth. Is
there anything I can do to talk you into staying off the scale for...maybe 2

Hi from a new poster but not new to breast cancer!
First let me say that there is NOTHING wrong with you second guessing
your results or doctors. One of the wonderful things about our
medical system is that we can ask questions, get second opinions and
if we aren't comfortable with how we are being treated.... move
onward and upward.
I feel lucky that I can be my own advocate and my doctor listens and
even researches options to suit my situation. Can I ask you - is your
cancer HER2 and/or estrogen positive?
I have heard a lot of "open to interpretation" from the oncologists
when they are talking about results and diagnosis. Frustrating but
life!
You have a great attitude! Keep it up!!!!!

Hello to all!
I've been wanting to find a group like this. Thank you for being here.
I have a very aggressive cancer and it is already in my liver, bones,
and mediastinal lymph nodes. Does anyone know a good online source for
end of life issues? My docs are telling me that I am terminal and
probably have a year to live... I know that they are usually not
correct in their assumptions, but I do need to get my life in order. If
you can help, please let me know.
Thank you for just being here. I will visit every day. Karen

Are you sure it's not water weight Lizanne? Remember, you have to take in 3500
calories MORE than what your body uses just to gain one pound of fat. I don't
see how eating that 1000 calories could make any difference if you did it in
three meals instead of four.

Hi Karen,
Welcome to the group. The doctors can only guess at how long a person has to
live. There have been ladies that have out lived their drs predictions by many
years.
Have you talked to your onc or the patient advocate at your local hospital? They
may be able to point you in the right direction.
I will keep you in my prayers.

HER2 and Estrogen positive breast cancer - please read!

2007-07-28 09:52:11

Hi everyone!
I am posting this story (my story) in the hope that it will help just
one women with their treatment, care and survival!!!
I am 38 and dealing with my 3rd round with breast cancer. Original
diagnosis was in April 1999 with breast cancer to the left breast and
some node activity. After 6 months of dilabilitating chemo cocktails I
was given Tamoxifine and told "go forth and prosper". I was never told
of the important fact that my cancer was HER2 and Estrogen positive and
what it meant to my future. A HUGE oversight by my oncologist at the
time.
Because my insurance changed I had to change oncologists. I was with
him for a year before my CA125 spiked. After all the standard MRI and
CT scans(which I had an allergic reaction to...Kodak moment)and more
blood tests, the cancer had taken roost in my lungs and liver. At that
time my doctor looked at my records and said... "Did you know that you
were HER2 positive?" If you didn't how was I suppose to know!!!! AARRGG!
Another round of chemo, added herception and was told that I needed to
remove the estrogen supply in my body. Therefore, I had my ovaries
removed. I have 2 beautiful children so as hard as it was to have
another surgery, it was a no brainer. Unfortunately, I relied on the
guidance of my oncologist and gynocologist as to the method of the
removal. Now, here is where this whole story is important.........
As tempting as the outpatient/laspro procedure can be it is NOT the
best option for anyone dealing with HER2/Estrogen positive breast
cancer. After having had the procedure done as an outpatient, my cancer
is back!
I have one small spot on my lung, 1 spot on my rib and 2 on my spine. I
am lucky, it was caught very early but it shouldn't of happened at all.
Is there any real way of saying that one caused the other? No, but I
have had 2 menstral cycles and my oncologist referred my to a gyno-
oncologist for referral. Bottom line is I just had a major surgery to
have it all cleaned out. There WAS ovarian tissue left behind even the
tiniest piece of tissue put me at risk for a reoccurence and that is
what happened. The gyno-oncologist told me that there is a 25-30%
chance of leaving ovarian tissue behind with the non-invasive manner of
removal.
I feel good about where I am right now in my treatment. I am in a
clinical study for Perifosine with herceptin. The Perifosine is an oral
drug and after getting the dosage down to a manageable dosage it has
kept my cancer stable.
Please be your own advocate and stand up for yourselves! Don't just
take what the doctor says as the only option. Ask questions!
Your all strong and wonderful women! I hope this helps someone!

Re: I have metastatic breast cancer and need some input

2007-07-28 02:04:34

Hi Karen,
It took me a long time to find this group also. I am sure everyone
will say the same but doctors really do not know. I have been
terminal 6 years now.(Imflamatory breast cancer stage 1v mets to
both breasts, skin, lung, brain, bone) Have had chemo weekly and still
never lost my hair so do not believe the hype! It is settling to get
life decisions in order whether you are terminal or not it just
makes it easier for your loved ones and gives you peace of mind.
There are many ways of getting your life together I found over the
last 5 or 6 years what that meant changed a lot from year to year.
Take care of one thing at a time and the less stress I found the
better my health has been. Stay positive.

Lora, I soooo understand where you're coming from. My hw was 359, my sw was
346, I have been at 258 for app 2 weeks. Today I am trying to only eat or
drink protein. No carbs today. I just want so bad to see 246. I know
that's not a goal to anyone but me, but I want to have lost 100lbs. By the
way, I love to sew, it takes the place of eating. I just made a t-top out of
some fabric I had in my stash and I made it a 20-22 and its too big!!! I can't
believe it. I am in shock!!! Right before I finished the seams I told my
daughter if it is too tight, I'll just take it in to a 16 and give it to her.
Now I'm keeping it!!! I have the coldest arms since surgery and I really have
to cover my arms or I feel terrible (not just to hide the bat wings!!) but I'm
freezing!!! Naomi
Lora <cicerogirl@...
anxious?!? LOL
It's like I'm being taunted by my body. Seems like someone else just
recently got stuck or had a slowdown just before a milestone... Sorry,
I don't remember who it was.
Yeah, I know, there's not much difference between being able to say
that I lost 97 pounds and being able to say that I lost 100, but
STILL... It was SO hard in the beginning when I was in such pain and
oozing for so long... and it's such ahrd work trying to get the
protein and water and vitamins in... and now my hair IS thinning... so
I *need* to be in the Century Club for my mental health!

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] 3 meals a day

2007-07-27 15:59:40

It seems reasonable to me that you could gain a pound over the period of a week
if food is going in and nothing is coming out. Also, how is your water intake?
Not drinking enough fluids will cause your body to retain fluids. It will also
cause constipation.
Pat
lizanneflowers <lizanneflowers@...
Ally,
I guess I don't get 1000 calories initially. Maybe I have to build
up to it. Truly, I think I will eat 3 meals and a snack. Te snack
being a protein bar. I am worried about getting enough proein on 3
meals a day. Today I didn't eat enough because I have been running
all day, but when I go back to work tomorrow, I should be able to
stick to a routine.
Onto Sharon's subject. I haven't had a BM in about a week, I think.
Today that changed. I wonder if that could have been part of the
problem. I don't usually pay attention to that function unless it's
noteworthy. I have never been an everyday or even everyother day
kinda person. But I don't know if I could gain a pound because of
that.

Re: Weight gain

2007-07-25 17:15:37

Lizanne,
I know this may sound crazy but my surgeon said if the potassium level is
low, you won't loose weight. He kept me on potassium pills as I do not eat
many bananas. Some people do not associate weight loss with what we take or
don't take. I found my weight stopped and then started taking my potassium
again and it is still slow but progressive just the same. My BM were also a
really big issue. The cramping was just about making me double over so I
took my stool softeners and ate a small bowl of popcorn and it did the
trick.
There are a lot of things that cause you NOT to loose and it isn't always
protein or water intake. Water is necessary for BM's though so keep that in
mind to flush your system but look into your potassium levels.

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] Sue's Plastic Surgery

2007-07-25 01:13:56

Hi Lizanne,
I had my surgery on Jan. 9th. My ps said it would be 6 - 8 hours, but it
ended up being about 10 hours. In fact, I didn't get out of surgery until after
10 PM. The reason it took so long was because in addition to the arms and
lower body lift, he removed a growth from my belly button (it was fluid that
hardened from my hernia that was repaired when I had my WLS in April 2006),
repaired a hernia that we didn't know about and mostly because I was oozing.
He said he'd couldn't make any headway because he kept having to take care of
the oozing.
The first day after the surgery was horrible. I questioned my sanity and it
was the only time, I had any regrets. The drains in the arms were really
uncomfortable and made it hard on my arms since they were in my armpit area.
The lower body lift hurt a lot too, but the arms were really the most
uncomfortable part.
I was only supposed to stay overnight at the hospital, but due to the length
of the surgery and just how I felt in general, my surgeon had me stay
another night. So I went in Wed and came out on Friday. My hubby and son were
staying in a guest residence hotel affiliated with the hospital and I asked
hubby to book two more nights so I was close to the hospital and did not have
to
travel far to get home. So we stayed there until Sunday and then I stayed
with my mother for a week so she could pamper me. I had a great time with her,
we haven't spent that much time together in a long time and it was really
nice. Plus she came with to my follow up appts.
As far as cost, the whole thing cost me 23K. I had to prepay it, but I had
submitted a letter from my PCP, bariatric surgeon, a personal letter and
pictures of my belly and rashes for insurance. Initially I received a letter
saying that I had not submitted enough proof of medical necessity, but then a
few days later, I received a call from the surgeon's office that I had been
approved for the stomach portion of the surgery. Because I now had money
coming
back from the surgeon, he asked me if I wanted to have the full lower body
lift done for the difference. At first I asked if I could have my inner
thighs done, but he said he would do whatever I wanted, but it was not the best
way to go. So I decided to go ahead with the LBL after all and I am glad that
I did. I am still supposed to get money back from the insurance, but have
not received anything as yet.
My highest weight before WLS was 326 and I got down to 140 - 145. I now
wear size 5 -6 in panties and can wear bikinis, briefs and boy shorts if I
want.
Even tho I am still pretty swollen, he did a great job. My sister in law
thought he was going to take 20 lbs off me, the surgeon himself thought it
would be about 14, but in fact, he said they only weighed 8 lbs. As of yet,
due
to the swelling, I have not lost any weight and this morning weighed in at
141.8.
My only issues now after almost 3 weeks is that I have a spot on my butt
crack that has not healed as well as the rest of me, but I put cream on twice a
day and the spot is slowly healing. I also have pain in my arms, they've
been very sore, but I take tylenol with codeine and that helps.
As far as what I learned from the experience is to be realistic. Having said
that, knowing what I know now I would still do it exactly the same, but I
was of the mindset that if I said I was not going to have pain, I wouldn't have
pain, lol, but that's not always how it is in the real world. I had a lot
of pain, but I got up and walked the day after surgery and walked more the next
day and every day got gradually better.
I would tell anyone who is going to combine plastic surgeries to be aware
that it's going to hurt. I still some day would like to have my inner thighs
done, my boobs lifted off my knees and a face lift, and I would still consider
combining to get them done faster.
Hope that answers your questions.

Hi Alex,
I'm so glad to hear an update on you. You've been on my mind alot.
I've been wondering how you're doing, and hoping you'd fill us in
soon.
Please don't worry about "getting *everything* right," right now.
Keep reading over your materials, keep doing your workouts, keep
following your diet plan, and keep trying to implement the new
lifestyle changes. It will begin to come together for you as you keep
reviewing the lifestyle class materials, and mulling it over in your
mind during your workouts. Not only that, you have Debby and Judy to
help you in whatever way you need it. I know that they are willing
and able to review, discuss, and clarify anything that is giving you

As long as you keep putting in the effort, it's going to come

New here - Recurrence

2007-07-23 23:26:26

Hello, I am new here. I had Stage 2 in June 2001 at the age of 37. I
did partial mastectomy, chemo, radiation, lost my hair. I celebrated
5 years cancer-free in June of this year. Last Friday, I was told I
have mets. I went into the hospital with fluid on my left lung and
after 5 days, the doctors figured out it was a recurrence. I see the
surgeon for the port tomorrow and start chemo some time next week. I
am the mom to two sons, 22 and 20, and two daughters, 6 and 4, both
adopted from China at the age of 4. We just arrived home with our 4
year old only 30 days ago, and now cancer. I am stunned, shocked, and
in slow motion at this time. Trying to digest this all. I hope to
gain strength and support here, and give as much as I can also.

Scale Issues

2007-07-23 00:50:48

Simply....Nope. I have to see the scale twice a week. I won't use
the scale at home because it arbitrarily gives me a weight...not
necessarily an accurate weight. Sometimes it's only 7 lbs different
than the one at the gym, sometimes it's 12 lbs different. It's time
for a new scale, but I won't buy one because I know there will be no
way to keep me from weighing daily...or even more often. Twice a
week is my limit. Actually, I am wishing I could weigh myself today
to see if the BM thing was the root of my problem, but I will hold
out until Tuesday.

Hey Tracy!!! So good to see you again. We haven't talked in ages. I don't
see you on messenger anymore either. :-(
I do the same thing as you and others.. drink when I eat. I don't drink a
lot but as you, I hate the bad taste or dry mouth so I sip water. I wait
until about 30 minutes before I start to drink a lot though. I try to
behave when I can lol.
Sorry to hear you are still in pain. It is a shame you can't make a case
against your doctors for the screw up during surgery. You have to pay now
for the long haul and suffering is the issue. It is sad the patches, pills
or shots have no effect. Weren't you going to get a nerve block at one time
too? What happened from that?
So glad you gained a little back. I know you were concerned too from
continuing to loose as you were. Hope you stick around for a while :-)

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] Is this loving and supportive? To Terri

2007-07-20 10:23:46

I completely understand how this works. We are very invested in this wls and
at a very sensitive period in our lives. It enters into everthing we say and
do. when a topic comes up, we all think of it in very personal terms. I
sometimes reply to a topic with a very personal feeling or turn it into a
comment about ME and my experiences. I often post and then worry that someone
with take it the wrong way or feel that I turned there topic into something
about me. Please don't be offended by your topic turning on a person to talk
about something else. It is only natural to talk about your own experiences
and sometimes by talking about your own experiences makes the original poster
feel ignored. I also had a terrible time the first 4 months. I felt like I
missed my best friend, my real life-time companion FOOD. I missed the taste,
the smell, the comfort. I really didn't know how I would live without it. I
just know that at 8 months after surgery, food has
lost some of the importance in my life. Things are starting to taste better
and I can eat more, but it isn't the be all or end all of my existence. I am
sadder, and happier than I have been for years. I am actually experiencing
emotions that I covered with my blanket of snacks. I hope you are reading this
Terri, because it is directed at you. My emotions were ripped to shreds after
the surgery. I had no-one to turn to like my best buddy, food! It also made
me realize how much senseless eating I had done in my past. I ate when I was
happy, sad, lonely, frustrated, stressed, etc. It has been hard finding things
to fill the gap in my life, but I am working on it. It will take me the rest
of my life to keep working on this problem. Take a break from the group if you
need to, but remember we are here, and ready to be of help whenever you are
ready to post!! Also, please try to understand my explaination, I am not the
best writer, but I mean what I write.
Love to you, Naomi

I am sorry that you feel the way you do, but I know for a fact that

velvet to lorraine

2007-07-18 23:19:00

Hi Lorraine
Although this is in my sent box and I wrote last night it has never appeared
in the inbox so sending again
The one stitch X near the collarbone is where the guide wire went through to
take the line/tube from port into vein and on to the heart.
Between the collarbone stitch X and the next row, XXXXX if you press downwards
and you're maybe sore at the moment so don't press too hard but you should be
able to feel like a worm or a thick vein beneath the skin going down from
collarbone to next row of stitches. This is the line. if you feel all the way
down to the end you might happen on the port itself. (The guide wire is only
used for insertion it doesn't stay in you so the line won't be rigid.)
In mine, beneath your XXXXX stitches (except I had one line of stitches last
time, and four stitches with previous) is the port itself, it might be somewhere
else on you because surgeons all have their own methods. I have had four
diffferent surgeons at the same hopsital and they appear to have followed the
exact same pattern/method of insertion, now whether they were all trained
together or that is the only way to do it I don't know. But try to feel beneath
the row XXXXX, you must be able to feel something hard but again don't press too
much as early days and you could make it sore. I wish I could remember USA coins
then I could say you are feeling for so and so size.. I've just measured mine
across and it's about 5/8 of an inch. The other way maybe is to get a magnifying
glass and a mirror and see if you can see a tiny scab from where the needle went
in to test it and out again, you may just see a tiny dot of a scab. This would
be the centre of the port so squirt the
Emla on to that area.
If you can't find it just apply the Emla cream immediately below the XXXXX to
an area about 2 inches in diameter. Then press the film cover over but gently
otherwise the cream spreads out too much and you get less effect from the local
anaes.
'Eliminate air whilst maintaining thickness of cream without it leaking out
and soiling clothes' I have just raked through my old instructions.
The tubes of Emla cream here are dolly size, I sometimes wonder why they
produce such teeny amounts when the cream costs pennies ~ never mind I am
whinging.
I think tomorrow when you get it accessed you will learn a lot about it's
position, it's depth etc. If you can take a mirror with you so you can see what,
where and how, you can always put the mirror down when the gripper needle
actually goes in, though for me the feeling of the needle going in is totally
unlike a needle going in, it's like a push, anyhow if you have the Emla on you
won't feel it go in anyway. You may hear a click, this is when the needle hits
the back plate inside the port.
I think you really have to guess where to put the Emla because I feel a bit
lost over the Net describing this and not really knowing what USA latest ports
are like or know the method of insertion for your country but my guess is that
you will be accessed about an inch or less from the XXXXX stitches.
Perhaps when you are there you could ask if it is usual practice to place the
port directy below the incision, then we would know incase someone else asks in
the future on this forum
_____ this is my collar bone
* this is a tiny scar from the guide wire
l
l } these lines represent the line/tube i can feel beneath the skin
l
...l...... this is the incision scar
See the <
and an area of 2 inches diameter. I want to compact that last bit of drawing but
can't do it so imagine it squashed up a bit ~ that's hardly technical but I
guess you know what I mean
l( )l
this is about as wide as the whole port is, I want to draw a square around the
curves but can't figure a way to do it. Although square the edges are rounded
off and my old one has holes in each of the four corners for stitching in. then
if you imagine the round part is on the square
the access part are the two curves,.............but actually a
cirlcle,...................................... I'm giving up now, trying to draw
this, trying to describe this, it's too complicated and I've fiddled and fiddled
to try to describe mine and I am lost without my drawing buttons, I tried to
draw on a word document then cut and paste but it didn't come over to this reply
space. Type in portacath or cancerbackup Uk and you can see pictures of them or
ask if your nurse can find you a port to see, they often have training 'annies'
a soft part body model with a port in a bit like what we call 'resuscy annies'
the dummies you train on for resuscitation in first aid courses.
tell me which coin this is like please so I know if i have to describe to
someone ever again.
In a few hours time you will have learned so much.
You may not be feeling your port for two reasons, one you may have some fat
above it, I'm not saying you are fat though, or you may have had the fat removed
so the port is nearer the surface and more visible and more accessible, mine is
the fat reduced type but I am really skinny so it is quite pronounced at the
moment.
Ok I am sure ll will go well ~ it'll be a breeze

Lisa A,
You are not a dork, you just have a problem with social settings. A
lot of people have that problem. Depending on the situation, I have
that problem too. Especially if there is a guy involved who I really
don't know yet. Being friendly is one thing, being interested is
another situation. I don't think I ever went as far as throwing up,
but I have done some klutzy things. At least afterward I could laugh
at myself. We are who we are, and by the time I have reached my ripe

I think i want to put my 2 cents in here . .i just wanted to make a point and
not to hurt anyone. .
Some of our surgeons have told us to eat 6 small meals a day. . my surgeon said
to eat 3 because anymore than that is grazing. . I still graze more than i
should.
I think each one of us is an individual and what works for one person may not
work for another. . we have seen this in how some people after surgery loose
tons of wt and some of us crawl in dropping the pounds. . My personal opinion is
to try ea way for a period of time and see which one works the best for you. .
We all metabolize our food differently and lose wt differently .. I dont know
which way is right because there doesnt seem to be a Gold standard between our
surgeons. . so we have to find out what is right for us. . I think if eating 6
times a day for Ally works .. then thats great. . for others, 3 times a day
works. . our bodies are all so different and we just need to find out what works
for us. .Hope i didnt step on any toes. . you know i love you guys and just want
to help..

Thank you for sharing this. I am a Stage IIIa, grade 3 gal at this point
rapidly approaching my first year as a bc survivor. My prognosis is not very
good for reoccurrence or longevity, and I face that with a certain amount of
regret and sadness. How could I not. But I am at peace with it almost all the
time. I am grateful for each and every day since my bc Dx last April and like
you believe that it's up to each of us to make the best life possible for
ourselves with what we have.
Nonetheless, your attitude gave me a lift today. Every time I hear from someone
who is still alive and LIVING that life after being diagnosed as Stage IV
bolsters my belief and resolve that I will be able to cope and make the best of
my life if and when I get that news.
Tomorrow I have a PET scan to get a different view of lymph nodes deep within my
chest between my breasts that were enlarged last June (after surgery in May) and
have gotten larger since. I'm so hoping that it will not be bad news.
But if so, I will be comforted that there are women like you out there who are
still very busy with the business of living.

Now is soooooo much easier, but not easy. I have always taken care
of myself by myself, and I am very used to depending on only myself,
but I was just amazed that she saw this as the easy way.
I know it's not, and you are right, that's all that matters.
Everyday does seem to get easier because I have learned which food
have too many carbs or too little protein. I am exercising much more
than I ever thought I would and consistently. The hair and the alien
has been somewhat of a drawback, but eventually those things will be
adjusted. She knows about these things, and yet she tells me how
easy it is!!!??! I know what it has taken, I just never realised
others did not. Except my mom, she is still amazed about all that we
went through, because in the beginning she was nearly as involved as
I was in just dealing with the crap the hospital ignored. She gets
it, so I should be happy, because at least someone does understand.

Hi Sharon!
I don't think you're stepping on any toes at all. My surgeon does
say 3 meals a day, with 3 protein supplements in between. He doesn't
want me to eat 6 meals a day. So, my meals are my meals, and my
protein supplements are "snacks" of protein... ie, cheese, peanut
butter, peanuts/almonds, or an actual protein shake (if one is
available).
But I absolutely agree - whatever works for each of us. Each person
is soooo different.

New here, not new to breast cancer for Kimmi

2007-07-14 01:25:40

Hi Kimmi. So sorry to hear of your problems.
You seem reticent/apprehensive to speak openly to you current surgeon, I
suggest you speak to his P.A./ secretary and discuss your feelings or gather
courage and ask him to refer you to a plastics and reconstruction breast
surgeon. He can't refuse you and medical notes can be transfered by email or
fax, there is no problem. You can see someone urgently. Alternatively get on the
net and research plastics and reconstruction breast surgeons in you locality.
There are also breast cancer support groups often attached to the hospitals in
house or separately. Breast care nurses are good at advising you about where you
can get extra information, sometimes you can speak to someone who has had breast
cancer, mastectomies and reconstruction.
My experience is that I had saline implants three times, not twice, not once,
due to a junior doctor filling them with the wrong needle and damaging the ports
with consequent leaking but because of them leaking my surgeon advised me to
have gel fixed implants. That was a disaster and I was so upset that he offered
there and then to replace them with the saline.
The type I have are tear drop shaped Mentor gel and saline expandable. There
is a pocket on the front that has 25% gel, silicone, not the runny stuff though
and this makes then very soft.
They have a line and a port that is just under the skin at the side under the
armpit. You can't see the port but can feel it and it is accessed by pushing a
needle in and filling with saline. Doesn't hurt. To a degree you can have what
size you want, depending on what your body weight and frame is and what is
recommended. Each implant has a tolerance so you can have it just filled or
extra if you want. You are filled a bit at a time over a few weeks but have some
in when you come round from surgery.
The size of implant you have depends on the cavity that can be created within
the chest. The implants for breast cancer patients are normally placed under the
pectoralis muscle, this is the first one beneath the breast tissue but be warned
that the breast is fairly fixed. When you lie on your back the breasts do not
flop to the side but boy do you look good in a bikini top and yes there is life
are breast reconstruction. Mastectomies and reconstruction is a big op so don't
expect to get out of hospital and return to normal immediately. It might be 3,
4, 5, 6 weeks before you get back to work accordiging to how you heal.
Scarring, if the skin is cut you get scars. Mine are under the breast in the
fold/crease and after about a year they have faded.
Nipples, you can have tattoos but some surgeons can create a new nipple from
skin either behind your ear or the very top of you inside leg and towards the
girlie parts where the skin is darker. But you are unlikely to have any feeling
in your nipples or most of the skin over the breasts however, real nipples still
react, I don't know about created nipples.
Remember that reconstruction is not the same as the real thing and not the
same as augmentation, you are very unlikely to have breasts that are the same as
the originals, though I must say mine are improved and once you have gone down
that route there is no going back so be well informed , pester for information,
ask as many questions as possible, write them down and make a note of the
answers, ideally take someone with you who can write down the answers for you, a
breast counsellor/nurse can come in with you and write if you have no one else.
I couldn't imagine life without my breasts, some people have mastectomies and
are OK without reconstruction but my breasts are about 'woman' 'female' and
there is no right or wrong about this. My friend had a hysterectomy and grieved
for it, now that wouldn't bother me at all, it depends on the way we are, how we
feel about ourselves.
Hopefully you won't need a mastectomy/ies but research well because to be
informed means you can make choices and don't be afraid to say, 'no I don't want
that.' If you get a good plastics and reconstruction breast surgeon he/she will
show you implants and answer all your questions and sometimes you can get to
talk to someone who has gone through it all. If you don't ask you don't get, so
gather courage and get the information you need to make a well informed
decision.
Sorry if i sound bossy here.
Let's hope you don't need major surgery, come back to us with how you are
getting on please ~ would love to hear.
Take good care Velvet in UK
kimmi0124 <kim@...
Karen, thanks for your return post. Part of my problem is that my
surgeon has suggested that we wait to discuss any options until we
get the final pathology on the biopsy scheduled for the 3rd. While
he does breast surgery, he does other types of surgery as well and is
not a breast reconstruction specialist. I am having a hard time
finding "that" person, and if I do find "that" person right now will
they even consult with me at this point? Those photos are horrible,
yes they are, and I have decided to not look at them anymore.
I have got to be able to find someone in my area (Dallas) that
specializes in this type of surgery, right? Is that just a regular
plastic surgeon? I just don't know who to contact and my insurance
company is not being helpful at all. I kind of feel like I'm out on
a limb all alone with no support. What I worry about is that if the
biopsy does indicate that mastectomy is needed that my surgeon will
pressure me to continue on with him and I won't have been able to
talk with anyone else. Is there any kind of other resource out there
that I can use to find breast reconstruction specialists in my area?
Thanks all....Kim

Re: Sue's Plastic Surgery

2007-07-13 07:14:39

Thank you so much Sue, for all that information. I really appreciate
that you took the time to tell us all about your surgery. Did your
LBL involve an incision the whole way around your body? Did it get
rid of any "apron" you had? Did it pull the crack of your butt
nearly up to your waist? Did any of your top part of your abdomen
get smaller? I do have a lot of quesions because I don't know much
about plastic surgery, yet. I may get a tummy tuck, but I don't even
know if that includes the "apron" part that hangs a little or if that
just involves the area around my "open" scar. I have a hernia that
covers pretty much my whole abdomen between my "girls" and my belly
button. I want the bottom portion lifted too, but I think that is
not included generally. I will ask these things of the surgeon on
Wed. Again, thanks for your candor.

Ball is rolling

2007-07-12 13:40:51

I started going to the National Cancer Center in Tokyo this week
because my oncologist at my regular hospital was in a wait and watch
mood about my lung mets and I'm in a kick butt mood. The NCC
oncologist sent me around for a round of all the tests I'll need for a
more in depth consultation with the head of the department on 11/7. I
had most of the tests right then and there at my first appointment but
had to go back yesteday for a bone scan and will go for a heart
ultrasound next Tuesday so all the results will be ready. I have a
kind and knowledgible neighbor who will come with me on 11/7.
It looks like I may get herceptin either alone or with more chemo. I
still have many questions for the new doctors, but think it best to
wait until they have more data before we get into details.
The NCC is a little farther away than my usual hospital, but I'm
enjoying the new scenery for now.

I personally think you should try and not care what others think. . This is
going to be a life long process for us ....and if others dont understand and
think its the easy way ..they are going to think what they think. . ...I cant be
bothered by what others think anymore. . They didnt go into the operating room
w/ me, They were so nauseaus at first that they wanted to throw up their toe
nails. . They didnt live w/ the pain for weeks of recovery and they are not
dealing w/ the every chores for the rest of our life to make sure we have enough
protein and vitamins in our system to keep us going . .If they dont understand
.. there isnt a darn thing we can do to change their mind. . esp since im sure
you have told her on many occasions what you have had to go thru. .
I wouldnt let it worry you . .You know you did this to live longer... . to be
healthier and to feel like a human again.
I know i feel so much better today than i did 7months ago. .

It's not Ally's fault

2007-07-11 05:56:13

Ally,
I am outraged!!! Maybe you misunderstood is all I can say. I have
never felt that you are not doing a great job. We are all an
emotional bunch and my thought, and I hope I am right, is that one or
either of you that sent/read the message is emotional. That one took
what the other meant differently than intentioned. I do not believe
that you or the other person really meant you were the reason people
left.
We are all doing our best. Sometimes when we feel a certain way and
post, it may be taken wrong based on the reader's current emotional
status. I am so sorry that you feel like someone has blamed you for
a member leaving this group. We are all so friendly toward one
another that I can understand when someone feels left out. I wish I
knew a way to keep them with us as I truly love it when a new member
joins. I love answering their questions and giving encouragement.
Many times you have posted with encouragement and suggestions.
Ally, you are doing a great job. You are like the president of the
US, you really can't do anything on your own, you need us to support
any decisions you make. I support you 100% and will try to help new
comers feel welcome, oldtimers feel a need to stay, and I will try to
change my subject line everytime I post.

important things.

I eat numerous times a day.
I tried both ways ....numerous "meals" all day....and only 3 meals a day.
And this is what I found worked......for me.
I didn't put on weight eating only 3 meals a day.....but I found my self
absolutely obsessing about food......all day.
I was always hungry.....I lived for my next meal.
When I finally sat down to eat I found it much harder not to stuff myself
and stress my pouch.
I've chosen to eat numerous times a day.
When I get the urge to eat....I grab a hand full of something.
It takes the "edge" off....and I can stop panicking about my next meal.
I thinking that feeling of always being hungry is why most of my pre-surgery
diets failed.
You can "graze" all day....as long as you choose the food.

Lesley, I haven't been on this board much but just read about your
brain mets. I had a seizure about 3 weeks ago and they found brain
tumors. Lost most of the feeling and function on my left side. I've

treatments. I am getting better. I wish I could get he cyber knife but
my mets are really spread out. 5 yrs. is good! I was diagnosed
1/26/05, had 27 chemos for lung mets. Right before the seizure I had 5
weeks of Taxol/Navelbine. I think I got some shrinkage from that and
will have a cscan in a week or so on my lungs.

Re: [Stage IV Breast Cancer] Lorraine how did the port access and chemo go?

2007-07-08 21:52:23

Easy!!!!! Didn't feel the needle go in at all. Just a
pushing sensation. It just went great. The circle was
to show me where to dab the elma cream as I way
over-did it.
What a different in that God awful search for a vein
with their little hide-an-seek games, and those
bruises for days afterwards. And it's healing really
fast too. I'm already taking showers without having to
cover it.
I'll be getting my Aredia the same way too thru the
port. They did say that most blood draws at the lab
will still be on my arm as only nurses trained
specifically to use the port will be using it.
This was a good decision on all counts.

rash cream

2007-07-08 11:48:11

The one my PCP prescribed is Nizoral (ketoconazole) cream. It's an
antifungal cream. There is also some kind of steroidal cream, but I
didn't want that. (He said you can also use a diaper rash cream or a
talc powder (which I had started using), but if you are anticipating
having to have (or wanting) a TT down the road, it's useful to have a
prescription cream documented in the physician's records. SOmeone
also suggested that you NOT have the dr. put any refills on it so that
it gets documented in his notes every time you need to go back for more.
What I did NOT do, however, is actually have him LOOK at it... which I
should have done (and will do next time) so he can document the extent
or severity of the rash.
I have pretty senstitive skin, but this cream doesn't bother it.
Don't know if it would bother it of any of the rash was raw, though.
I didn;t want to let it get that bad!

Update on Hubby

2007-07-08 09:00:09

We had some good news of our own yesterday when we met with my
husband's new pulmonologist. They gave him the breathing test (I
forget the name - spirometry?) and reviewed all of his test results
and CT Scan. Yes he does have mild emphyzema (both upper lobes, not
lower right as I originally was led to believe by his primary doctor)
but the doctor said that since he gave up smoking completely a month
ago, his lungs will rejuvenate. The emphyzema will not go away
completely, but his function will increase with time. He told him to
continue on his meds as is and to add mucinex to get up the rest of
the gunk from his bronchitis AND all the nicotine and stuff from when
he quit smoking. He said that will take some time to come out.
The best news is my husband has finally agreed to leave his primary
doctor and see a new one. When we mentioned this to the
pulmonologist, he offered to take him as a patient to be his primary
doctor. I was absolutely thrilled! He understands about Scott's
weakness (his lungs) so if we need to see him in a hurry, we can.
You have no idea how relieved I am. I much prefer this doctor - he's
wonderful!
Anyway, I just had to share my news with everyone. Thank you for
your prayers for him - we've been given a second lease on life!!!
