Re: Drunkin Donuts Coffee

2008-02-29 21:09:17

Hi Joanne!
I actually had the Toasted Almond flavored coffee from Dunkin Donuts
at a different store and didn't have a problem. I make Hazelnut
coffee every morning for myself, and I don't have trouble there. As
long as it is the coffee that is flavored, it's not a problem - it's
when they give you plain coffee and then flavor it with a flavored
creamer or flavored sugar, then that's the problem. She took the
short cut, I would think. Big mistake on my part - I won't do that
again. It took me until this morning to be able to drink my
hazelnut coffee again - I've been drinking hot tea since Christmas
because the thought of coffee turned my stomach.

Drunkin Donuts Coffee

2008-02-29 16:32:46

I was thinking about this since I read it last night and remembered
that you said you had an almond coffee and I had wondered if those
flavor changers aren't loaded with sugar??? I remember years ago when I
used to drink coffee that the flavor enhancers were the only way I
could stand to drink the stuff, so my guess is that is where the sugar
may have come from and also wanted to post this just in case anyone
else tries to drink flavored coffee after surgery so they check
ingredients before consuming.
Joanne
Seattle
PS, you could always go back to DD and see what the ingredient lable
says on the almond flavor or if it is not a little added container,
maybe you could get the ingredients from online or maybe just call
corporate. They must have that info somewhere.

I'm EXHAUSTED!

2008-02-29 09:44:32

Anyone else having this issue? Is it post holiday exhaustion? I
just seem like I can sleep FOREVER! I'm not depressed. I'm eating
enough and drinking enough. I'm taking my supplements and drinking
those nasty protein bullets. So, why am I so tired. I just had my 6
month post op and all my levels were fine.
Also, I'm having a lot of acid reflux at night. I only get it after
taking my B complex and sublingual B 12. If I skip those, I don't
get the reflux. Any ideas? Would taking them in them in the morning
make a difference.
Also, I seem to be very sensitive to thing. Since surgery I haven't
been able to have my eyebrows waxed because I break out and it looks
like I've been burned. Friday night I decided to get a full set of
gel nails (never had fake nails before). I had an allergic reaction
and had to have them taken off Saturday morning. Anyone else
experience this type of reaction after surgery. It's like my body's
chemistry has changed.
Anyway,
I slept well last night and still feel like I need to sleep more.
BUT,have things to do, just thought I'd check in.
Happy New Year everyone!

Hi gals,
I've had to go through more of my clothing and eliminate some items.
It's been fun going "closet shopping" again! Anyway, this time I have
some Enell bras that I can no longer wear, and would really like to
pass them on to someone who wants them. Here's a link for those of
you who have never heard of Enell bras.
http://www.enell.com/index.html
These are the best supporting bras I have ever owned and they hold up
extremely well. Although they are a sports bra, I wear mine all the
time because they help to reduce the pain that can be caused by bra
straps (even the wide straps!) that affects my cervical spondylosis.
They have been worth every penny of their cost!
I also have some sleep bras if you would like to have those.
Here's what I am giving away:
Enell bras, size 5
4 white
1 beige
1 black
Serenad sleep bras, size 44
2 white
2 moonlight
If you think you would like to have these, please contact me off-list
with any questions you might have, and to give me your mailing info.

Keep in mind, though, that 1) some gift cards have a cery short
epiration date or lose a certain amount of their value each month,
and 2) depending on your size starting out, you may lose sizes
slowly at first, so it may be a while before you have to get rid of
much especially undies (I'm down 73 pounds and have just recently
had to throw SOME of my undies out... but some still fit (cotton
w/stretch))
Maybe you could check the policies on the cards (sometimes you
actually have to contact the store... grrr) and get a little
something with ones that have that short expiration?

Re: Off Topic: Dogs

2008-02-28 07:23:48

doesn't
This is a tall order Shannon, if you go purebred, non shedder to avoid
stinky doggy odor, you will be looking at pricey dogs. Bichons are not
considered a cheap breed but you may be able to find one real cheap by
looking towrds the 'puppy finder' websites and having one shipped out
of the midwest but then you risk unknowingly supporting a puppy mill.
Some of the cheaper breeds tend to be the hounds and sometimes smaller
bird dogs but the hounds shed and do have doggy odor (like a beagle,
basset and less odor, a dachshund.) For bird dogs, think cockers,
Springers and Brittanys.
Another thing to consider is that the non shedders will require regular
grooming (A minimum of once avery three months and only that
infrequently if you plan to have the dog totally shaved down each time,
otherwise, they may need grooming as frequently as every 2 to 4 weeks
if you want them fluffy.)
Finally, in choosing a purebred, you have to understand that every
purebred dog has genetic health issues associated with it and the only
way to keep veterinary costs to a minimum is by going to the best
breeder that you can afford and buying a pup with a written health
guarantee of at least up to 2 years of age. This is NOT to say that the
designer dogs (the glorified crossbreeds) are a better choice UNLESS
the breeder you purchase from ALSO offers a two year WRITTEN health
guarantee against all genetic defects.
Steer far away from pet stores, you will pay more for a lesser quality
puppy and even though they may guarantee the pup, you can always do
better by going straight to the breeder. If you want an affordable pet,
go adopt from your county shelter but do understand, if you try to
adopt from a Human Society they most likely will not place a dog in a
home without a fenced yard. So in that case, you might consider a cat
or kitten or a rabbit.

Underwear Dilemma

2008-02-28 05:49:40

Lizanne, thank you for thinking about my underwear on your way to work
but since my doc appt is on Jan 12th and I could have surgery just 3
weeks after that date, my friend out here has convinced me to hold off
on buying anything new. I have a stack of gift cards for all kinds of
stores from my customers and I had told her that I was going to go out
this week and go nuts but she insisted I hold off until maybe spring?
Long time to go wanting new undies and all but I would hate to toss
practically new undies.

5 DPT CHALLENGE starts Jan. 2!!

2008-02-26 22:59:41

Looks like January 2nd will be the official "kick off" day for our 5 Day
Pouch Test.
Everyone who will be participating may want to read up & be prepared for the
2nd.
I like to make sure that I have all of the supplies already....that way I
don't have to go shopping for any of the proteins while I'm potentially
hungry.
Post ops who will be reducing their carb intake (significantly :-) may
notice a bit of a mood change or headache.
I mention this because January 2nd will be the start of a work week for some
of us.
I normally do the 5DPT on a long weekend or when I don't have to "detox"
while dealing with work pressures as well, so doing the first 3 days while
at work will be a challenge.

quick question about detaching or not detaching pouch

2008-02-26 09:44:55

Just wondering how many of you who had RNY have "detached" pouches
(i.e., the pouch being completely cut away from the stomach) and how
many have just a staple line separating pouch and stomach? With all
the research I did pre-op, I just recently found out that there are
two ways to do the surgery and am curious about which version most
people have...
... and the funny thing is that I'm not even sire which one I have
because I have two RNY anatomincal pictures in the pre-op educational
info from the surgeon and one shows staples and one shows separation.
(I added that to my list of questions for the surgeon when I see her
in early February.)

Hey All:
Anyone interested in doing a 5 Day Pouch Test challenge??
I've put on a couple of pounds over the holidays....and am feeling a bit
sluggish.
I've been a little lax on "the rules"....and the vitamins....and the
protein....and...
I want to "jump start" things & get back on track.
I was going to do the 5DPT starting tomorrow....then I thought that maybe others
might want to start the New Year off on the "right foot".
I thought that it might be both fun....and supportive, if we knew that others
were doing the same challenge at the same time.
We can all "report in" everyday....if we so wish.
If there's any interest we can start January 1st.....a New Year's resolution
that's quick....and realistic to complete.
The 5DPT is virtually guaranteed to take off weight....and take your pouch back
to basics.
So we "tighten" our pouch, lose weight....and feel good about ourselves....all
in the first 5 days of 2008.
Anyone interested??

How long have the two of you been together? I'm sorry if you've

live now? Did he used to live near you and then moved back?
A lot of things change for all of us as we start to lose the weight;
even how we feel about ourselves. I know I feel more attractive now
more than ever, and that translates to how I dress, etc. He was
with you before, so I wouldn't say that the weight was a deal-
breaker. He was with you before you lost the weight. And yes,
you've lost weight and you feel good... and maybe he's just saying
to himself "I love her for who she is, and hmmm maybe I oughta move
back so I don't lose her to someone else that's closer!" I always
want to think the positive about people, so I could be totally off,
but I'd like to think that he wants to spend more time with you.

Now, on one hand, this is a good thing, but I'm a little uneasy
about the fact that this has only come up since I had the surgery...
which translates in my mind to "now that he knows I'm going to get
the weight off".
I know that, to some extent, looks DO matter... and (in my
experience, at least) sex is better without the excess weight... but
it's almost as if the weight was "deal breaker" for him... and I'm
very confused about how I feel about that.
I know that WLS can change relationships in many ways (although I am
surprised that none of the clinical books on counseling WLS patients
have much info on it... or for other common issues, for that
matter... I'm starting to think that *I* should write a book!)...
I'm just confused and not even sure where to take the conversation
with him. I'm not even sure what I'm asking here... just looking
for thoughts, I guess.

Hi Kay!
Welcome! Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! Being excited and
nervous all at the same time is perfectly normal! You're excited for
your new life to begin, but a bit nervous about what you have to do to
get there. Just keep a positive attitude through everything, make
sure you get up and walk as soon as you can, and make sure you drink
your fluids!

Milk of Magnesium is the fast cure for constipation. On a regular
basis, though, I take Colace every other day. It helps keep me
regular.
I hope this helps, Naomi. There's nothing worse than being impacted!

Remaining labs are finally back

2008-02-19 18:32:53

I'm now 4 months out but had my 3-month labs done in two parts (long,
boring story), and the second batch of results just came back
yesterday. My glucose level dropped from 6.1 pre-op (pre-diabetic) to
5.7 (which is still considered pre-diabetic but is only .2 away
from "normal") and my iron levels are still ok without taking the
supplement. (All the vitamin levels they checked in the first batch
were fine, but they did an additional iron test in the second batch
just to be sure it was ok.)
My cholesterol didn't change significantly (122 total), but BOTH my
HDL (36) and LDL (64) are low (which, in the case of LDL is good, but
not so good in the case of HDL -- where it is bad to have it too high
OR too low, apparently). My PCP said I don't need to do anything
different, though. Has anyone else had their HDL ("good" cholesterol)
level drop after surgery? Is it because we're not eating enough...?

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] Surgery Soo

2008-02-19 05:09:10

Kay,
I was so excited and nervous just before my surg. I almost cancelled
minutes before the procedure started. I am now 6 weeks out and thrilled I
did it. I see a great 2008 for me. I am now more excited about the future
than I was nervous about the procedure. I have not had any problems (a bit
of a leak post op, but by the 3rd day that resolved itself) no nausea,
vomiting, depression... Learn as much as you can, the more educated you are
the more prepared you will be, the less "surprises" down the road.
Take a deep breath, keep in the forefront of your mind why you are doing
this, it will help you keep plugging along. I am no longer diabetic, in
fact no meds since I left the hospital (I was on 2 med's for the past 10
years), no more blood pressure issues, at my Dr.'s apt this afternoon my BP
was 110/63, no more cholesterol meds...... If you have any co morbidities
like this, remember this is why your doing this, not just for a smaller
size.
Good luck,
Edie

Robin,
So sorry that you had to deal with that, but yes, I think many of us
have had the same reaction from eating too fast. Your pouch may feel
a little tender today and tomorrow morning. Eat some bland food for
the next two days and things will go back to normal. I hate that pain
and uncertainty.

Eating Too Fast Question???

2008-02-18 03:25:40

Hi All,
I haven't posted alot lately since I have been back at work. I have a
project that goes live on Jan. 2nd so it has been crazy. Anyway, my
usual A type personality was eating lunch too fast today. It was
chicken. And it got stuck in my pouch or that area that hurts like
hell when you do not chew enough. Anyway after an excruiating hour,
and vomiting - only foamies (sorry for the being too descriptive), I
feel a hell of alot better. Only thing is it feels like my pouch is
kinda bruised or sore. Is this normal??? I am eating applesauce now.
I will never do that again.

Naomi. . if you are in pain. . the first thing you need to do is get rid of what
you have . .then work on a regimen that will help it not happen again . .
I would try a Fleets enema and if it doesnt work the first time. . try it once
more. .
I would also try taking some Milk of Magnesia as that really helps me and doesnt
cause cramping. I wouldnt take a stimulant laxitive as it does cause cramping.
.
If all that fails . .you need to go see the doctor. . Impactions are nothing to
wait for. .
I eat Prunes now and although i dont go every day . . i do go more often now. .
you might want to try that after everything is cleared out. .
Hope that helped a little. .

Kay,
I am so glad you posted. You are about to embark on a very
interesting and exciting journey. At times there may be
difficulties, but mostly it's the beginning of your dreams coming
true. You will become more healthy. There are some little problems
afterwards...some psychological ups and downs, and struggles to get
all your fluids and protein in. Just try to follow the programs your
surgeon and nutritionist give you. And make sure you walk. That
helps with any pain you have from the surgery and it keeps you active.
Don't forget your chap stick, pillow for the ride home and phone
charger. Keep us posted concerning your recovery. Do you have a
surgery angel? I would be willing to take that responsibility.

re: my daughter

2008-02-16 00:52:56

Penny,
I realize this is a late response but had some electrical problems in my
room and couldn't get online. Anyway, if you can believe it I went to the
movies on Christmas dad with my ex. Yea, I know it sounds weird but I
didn't want to be alone and my daughter bailed on me both Christmas eve and
Christmas day. My roommate went over her aunts house then to work
afterwards so I was left by myself. We had a good time, talked a lot which
is always good. We are friends now, even with all that has happened.
My daughters car broke down on Christmas eve and put her in a bad spirit...
got it fixed today and they didn't charge her for it. She gave them $40
anyway for their time. One of the pulley's on her car broke and the belt
wouldn't turn so couldn't be steered or driven. I helped her as much as I
could.. bought the parts but she went ahead and got the parts on her own so
mine went back. I still helped her financially though so she could still
pay for gas as she doesn't get paid until this weekend. It is also her
birthday on the 30th so we are getting together on Friday to celebrate early
and before I leave on Saturday. My ex is coming over to help pack the car
up... especially the TV. If it doesn't fit, my roommate will inhereite the
TV instead (which she needs anyway lol).
I will be at my sisters over the weekend and have an appointment to take a
test for a job I put in for and was accepted for the first stage. It is a
2-1/2 hour computerized test that is English and looking at things through a
magnatometer to see if I could pick out things that could make a bomb. I am
applying for a job working at Airport Security and is a government job too.
It is going to take time to get it so will get something else in the mean
time but it is a start in the right direction.
I hope everyone had a great Christmas.. didn't over eat too much. :-)

Food Satisfactio

2008-02-15 21:11:45

I'm a bit like that to Lizanne, the last few weeks every time I walk past
the food in the kitchen at work (all the gifts patients give...) I smell it
and imagine what it tastes like, but there is now way I would put any of it
near my lips. I know I'm still a relatively new post op, but I've seen on
these boards that others not that far ahead of me have tried allot of new
foods that I would not even consider yet. I'm scared that I'll blow this,
and I did not go through all of this to blow it (I hope I will be saying

My anniversary is 10-16. But I doubt we'd do it next year (even though it

April or May (hopefully) so I'll want him to have his opportunity to loose
and, 2) I had bilateral mastectomies in Oct. 04, because of breast cancer
and want my new boobs before we do that. I'm not even a candidate for the
surgery until I loose 80-100 lbs, so hopefully I can have my new boobs in
late summer/early fall. So I may get my new boobs for my anniversary
:o). we'll see.
Thanks for the thought it was so sweet, if and when we do it, I'll let you

Re: Food Satisfaction

2008-02-14 15:59:55

I didn't feel deprived yesterday, but it was just my small family
yesterday and we all agreed that we wold rather have a simpler meal
this Christmas (and enjoy the time with each otehr instead of
spending the hours cooking and cleaning up), we had a simpler meal
(and had no rolls beause mom forgot them at the grocery!), and I was
able to eat just a bit of everything (I didn't put any fried onion
IN the green bean casserole, just on top, so I could pick them off,
and I only ate some of the cheesy top of the au gratin potatoes my
brother's girlfriend made). I have, however, really missed being
able to eat the Christmas cookies and sugary treats. I didn't make
any gingerbread scotties/men thsi year, because I knew I would be
too tempted to eat them (even if I made them with Splenda).
I'm not sure how much LESS of a hold food has on me since surgery,
though. On one hand, other than the occasional bad day when I'm
sick and tired of eating the same stuff and want something I know I
cannot have (either physically or psychologically), I don't have too
much trouble finding healthy choices of things to eat and not
stressing over what I cannot have... and if someone else is eating
something really yummy, I *do* allow myself to enjoy just a small
bite (and am almost always very satisfied with that one bite). I
can have just 2 M&Ms to satsify a chocolate craving. On the other
hand, however, I bought some reduced fat Vanilla Wafers a few weeks
ago and I had trouble limiting myself to just one or two cookies
(and was eating a few every day instead of only every couple of days
as a treat). I had to get them out of the house because I did not
feel like I was in control... or as MUCH in control as I needed to
be. I had a similar thing happen with some mini-muffins at work a
while ago: I promised myself I would eat only half of one, but then
not only did I eat the whole thing but I ALMOST went back for a
second one. So there are some food items that I have to just
completely stay away from because I am not (yet) strong enough to
control.
I know that I *think* about food more post-op than pre-op, because I
am always trying to remember to drink more and to be sure I meet my
protein requirements. Some food triggers are gone (or are easily
enough silence/avoided), but others are still there just as strong
as ever. I try to remind myself, though, that these habits and
triggers have been with me for YEARS, and I am only 4 months out
from surgery so it is not surprising that I still struggle with some
of them.
I am interested to hear what other post-op folks' experiences have
been...

Oh, Dawn, I'm so sorry the eggs made you so sick on Christmas Day.
My little pumpkin pie dumping episode was nothing near that bad (and
that wasn't until after 5pm)!
You have lost so much weight in such a short time, but I feel bad
that you have so much trouble with foods making you sick. I guess
*I* should focus more on how thankful I am that I only rarely get
sick after eating, and focus less on the fact that I am a slow loser.
I hope you are able to enjoy the leftovers (even if it isn't the
same as enjoying them with everyone yesterday).

New to Group - 3rd Timer

2008-02-14 08:01:36

I'm writing this post to introduce myself. I found this group from
the reference on the breastcancer2 site. I'm also glad to be able
to post here and not scare the "first timers".
Last week, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer for the 3rd time.
In September 1995, had 3 lumps removed (invasive ductal and invasive
lobular stage 2, grade 2, negative lymph nodes). Treated with
mastectomy and tram flap reconstruction and CMF chemo.
I recurred in January 2004 (invasive ductal (ER/PR neg, HER2 neg, in
mastectomy scar and small amount of cancer in lower leg). Treated
with weekly Taxol for 12 weeks and Radiation (finished in July
2004). Since then, I have continued to receive a monthly Aredia IV.
Last week (late September 2006), I had 3 lumps (lymph nodes) removed
from side of my neck halfway between my ear and my collarbone
(invasive lobular - ER/PR to be determined but I suspect will be
negative) on same side as my original tumors. My PET/MRI scans were
negative and my blood work was negative. My surgeon removed them
to "doublecheck" .....and I had the bad news. Due to the negative
scans, my oncologist is discussing my case with a tumor review board
so I won't know my recommended treatment until later this week.but
I suspect radiation and chemo.
I have read on this site that several people have had tumors on
their neck. I would appreciate your comments about the neck
radiation so I what to watch for. How many treatments were you
given? Side affects? Any damage to the hearing, taste, or saliva
glands? Did anyone have cancer in the neck lymph nodes and NOT
have radiation?
I am also wondering if anyone has gotten second opinions from well-
known Breast Cancer centers. If so, did they generally confirm your
oncologist's recommended treatment?
I won't be online for about a week because we are heading out for
camping near the Klamath River so my husband can do some gold
prospecting and we can have some fun before the treatments begin
AGAIN
Thank you for your help.

Papaya

2008-02-13 16:18:51

Debby,
It's supposed to help calm your stomach after a difficult time. I
have read that as we get older our bodies aren't so good at
maintaining some enzymes. The digestive enzyme that is in papaya is
one of them. I don't know if that is true, but I have heard that
papaya enzymes do help with digestion. My mom takes them also.

Food Satisfaction

2008-02-13 12:25:02

Dawn,
I was going over in my mind today, all the food I didn't eat. Then I
thought about whether I felt deprived. I had my surgery in August
and since then have not eaten any pasta, bread (except for half a
roll months ago), rice, candy, cookies, although I baked plenty, pies
or cakes or any sweets at all. I don't have a craving for them,
except maybe angel hair pasta. I did want a bite of Southern Pecan
Pie this past week because everywhere I when I was offered some. I
finally ate a pecan. I look at the lovely food, but just shake my
head and walk past, thinking I am stronger than food.
Your question was...Were we satisfied with what we did eat...well, I
didn't feel like I ate anything special, and that makes me a little
sad, because it is that time of year. I don't feel anything about
the food I did eat, and maybe that's the point. Food no longer has
its crumby little morsel fangs latched into me. Maybe, for the time
being anyhow, food no longer controls my life. Then again, I am
still not getting all the protein and water I need, so maybe it
should grab ahold of me better. Well, I'm rambling. My question
is...do any of you feel food has less of a hold on you now that you
have had the surgery?
I received gifts of chocolates and cookies, but have not opened
them. I just don't know what to do with them. Any ideas? I have no
idea where a donate them, and I'm not sure if a shelter would welcome
homemade cookies without worrying about the source. Does anyone know
about that?

Re: Merry Christmas

2008-02-13 04:30:37

Ally,
You started your message out correctly...."Hello Friends". Although
I have been very busy lately, both at home and at work, I just wanted
you to know how wonderful you have been to me. This board was your
idea, and I am so glad you did it or I would have been left in the
cold to work through all these little problems I have been having. I
just wanted you to know that I truly appreciate you, Ally.
But, I do not mean to leave anyone out. You have all been
encouraging me to make myself a better person and to give me some
great suggestions when I need help. I know most of the things I have
whined about have been minor by most standards, but to me they are
very important. I am siiting here in one of my new wigs, not
worrying so much, that my hair is STILL falling out by the handfuls.
I don't know what to do except just wait it out. Who knew I was
going to go from a fat, unhealthy female to a healthier, bald,
wrinkly person? But, that major hurdle has begun to be
surmountable...I am getting healthier, unless malnutrition
counts....just kidding.
I just want you all to know that you have been very patient with me
and my whining and I appreciate all you have done by gritting your
teeth and helping me move onward.....THANKS, ALL!!

I do, indeed, dump on sugar... a Christmas lesson

2008-02-12 17:24:18

Well, it took 4 months for it to happen, but I found out yesterday
that, yes, I do indeed dump on sugar. (I was really starting to
wonder.)
At Thanksgiving, I was able to eat the filling (no crust) of a small
slice of pumpkin pie, and I have had small amounts of the filling from
the pumpkin pie at a local restaurant, so I did the same late
yesterday afternoon. Same size piece, but different brand of pie.
Not too long after eating the pie filling I started to feel queasy, a
little shaky, and a little lightheaded; not long after that the
diarrhea and intestinal cramping hit. It wasn't as bad as many
dumping episodes I have read about (thankfully!), but it was decidedly
unpleasant.
So... note to self: no more than a bite of Marie Callendar brand
pumpkin pie...

Re: [WLS Friendship & Support] Merry Christmas!

2008-02-12 07:05:29

Welcome back Dawn! Sorry about all the computer problems, and that you were
sick on Christmas, but at least it sounds like you had a good Christmas eve and
Christmas morning. :) I'm sure next Christmas will be much better since you
will be so much further out from surgery.
Pat
Dawn <scottndawn@...
Good morning!
It's the day after Christmas and I'm finally back online. So much
has happened since I was last online, it would take me a year to
catch everyone up. To sum it all up, since the 15th of December,
I've had my son's big birthday party, the family birthday party,
finished Christmas shopping, wrapped ALL gifts, lost the computer
(it crashed big time), got the computer back, lost it again (memory
problem), went to a Christmas eve party, got the computer back
again, then celebrated Christmas. And in between all of that, I
worked regular hours. I have to say "I'M EXHAUSTED!"
Yesterday morning was so much fun, seeing my son open his gifts. My
mom stayed overnight then we were bringing her to my brother's house
before going on to my mother-in-law's house for the day. I made
breakfast for the family (scrambled eggs, bacon and toast) with
coffee. I was fine for about 2 hours, but on the way down to see my
mother-in-law's, my stomach started to hurt... like the eggs weren't
sitting well. Once I got down there, the search began for an opened
store to look for papaya. No luck. Bottom line? I spent my
Christmas day puking. I was so bummed. My mother-in-law puts on a
spread. I mean, there's tons of food... and really good food too.
When I first had my surgery I kept saying to myself it's 6 months to
Christmas and I'm sure I'll be able to sample a little bit of
everything by then. And the weeks coming up to Christmas, I was
really looking forward to the day not only because I'd be able to
sample the food she cooked, but because we always have such a nice
time at her house (I love my mother-in-law - she's a wonderful
person and so much fun to spend time with). I just feel so bad
because I feel like I ruined Christmas.
Now, she gave us tons of food to take home - so it's not about the
food. If I'm up to it today, I can sample whatever I want. It's
about the day - Christmas Day. We came home early (and boy my son
was not happy about leaving Nana's house early) and I was in bed by
8pm. I was so exhausted and wiped out. I am so thankful I had
taken the day off today to just rest; now I need to recover.
Anyway, I hope everyone else had a great day yesterday. How did you
all do with food? Were you able to sample everything? Did you feel
satisfied with what you were able to eat, or sad you couldn't eat
certain things?

Mary,
You certainly have been on an emotional roller coaster lately.
Getting rid of the ring will probably help you move on since you
won't have to look at it everyday. The birthstone ring was so much
better. You have a new life starting...a re-birth. The new ring can
help you mark that ocassion.
I am still almost jealous of your situation. I know you probably
don't feel that way. But a new life, a way to start over. That is
so exciting. You'll be near family, who are good at support along
with pushing us to do the things we should do.
Good luck on your new journey.
Lizanne

2008-02-11 11:07:23

Ally,
Did you bring it home? I know you can't post a pic while wearing it
until your wedding, but could you post one of the dress? I am sure
you will be just beautiful. Can you have it taken in as you lose
weight? I lost so much weight just before my wedding, many years
ago, that the bridal shop told me they would only alter the dress ONE
MORE TIME. Ah, if I could get anywhere near fitting into that dress
I would ber happy, now.

Now I am second guessing my self, is this normal? did I do the right

Merry Christmas!

2008-02-10 14:52:16

The presents are wrapped and under the tree

2008-02-08 19:26:07

I've not been online much the past few days because my sweetie has
been here (he's driving back today and then is coming back again on
Thursday until the 2nd -- happy new year to me, LOL!), but I just
wanted to pop in to wish everyone a Merry Christmas OR a Happy Holiday
and to let you all know that as of this morning, I am down to 249.5
pounds. Whoo hoo -- under 250 -- that means I can wear my
new "reward" sweater! (Unfortunately, tonight and tomorrow I will be
at my mom's, and she smokes (I don't want to get it all stinky), so
I'll probably wait until New Years Eve to wear it... and then he can
take a picture for me.)

p.s. I added a side view pic that he took the other day... not sure
why, but I really love it...

Shannon, I highly recommend good old mutts if you want to avoid inbred health
problems. And the pound is the best place to go, because they kill all the dogs
that aren't adopted. You can save a life!

We want to get a dog sometime next year and are thinking about breeds.
We need a dog that doesn't need to be able to run free around the yard,
but will be happy being walked several times a day. We also need one
that doesn't shed much and doesn't have that overwhelming dog smell all
the time.
We have 2 special needs girls, but they are older 10 and 13 and are
usually fairly calm, but can occassionally have melt downs (well the 13
year old bipolar/high functioning autistic).
My youngest will want to walk the dog often, so a dog that won't
overpower her is needed.
ANY SUGGESTIONS? We were thinking bichon frise (sp?), but we just
don't know. We also don't have a lot of money, so a breed that doesn't
have a tendancy to get certain health problems and doesn't cost a lot
to begin with.
Thanks,

because I am not stage 4 and have in the past only posted about our
group attending the Race for the Cure(R) in various parts of the
country. However, I had my MRI today for the brain tumor I had in
2004 (non-malignant for those of you who may not know about it) and
thought I would let you all know that if by chance you have a
metastasis of your bc to your head/brain, please ask your doctors
about gamma knife surgery. I know it is used for breast cancer that
has gone to the brain and am not sure if any of you are aware of it.
I had a private e-mail from Doris C. right after I was diagnosed
asking me about my surgery and also from a couple of others in this
group but can not remember your names. I am using this to let you
know that gamma knife is indeed used for tumors that are in the brain
(Jeana and I both knew one bc lady who had it but had too many tumors
so it did not work for her. I also know a man who had his cancerous
tumor removed from his brain with the gamma knife and he is doing well
at this time.). Be aware of the new treatments that are available and
ask, ask, ask your doctors what is available. I did not know about the
gamma knife surgery myself until I was diagnosed accidentally with the
tumor on my brain. My tumor was thankfully, not cancer but had it
been, I think it would be gone by now. I will know in about a week if
my non-malignant tumor is gone. In the meantime, I am doing well and
finding that life is indeed worth the fight. Doris Fandal in Louisiana
P. S. By the way, our group went to the Portland, OR Race for the
Cure(R) in September and Jeana and her husband Ken were fantastic host
and hostess as were the other members of her family. We will be going
to Florida next year for the race there and would love to have some of
you join us there.

I'm still here guys!

2008-02-07 14:57:12

Hello everyone,
I am here. I don't post often, but I do read.
I am all ready for Christmas. I made a dinner yesterday for my in-
laws. We had pork chops, mac and cheese, broccoli casserole, and sweet
potatos. We also had a YUMMY pinapple fluff cake. (I'll post that in a
bit).
Tonight I made another Christmas dinner with a roast, which was soooo
good and moist, roasted veggies, mac and cheese, strawberry/pecan salad
with raspberry vinagrette--yum. Ok--I'll tell you how to make that too.
We also had lots of deserts!
I wanted to say thank you to all the Christmas card senders. I just
cant afford to send cards out right now, but getting cards in the mail
from you all made me so happy. I have them all hanging on my wall.
I seem to be stuck at 265 now for about 4 weeks. I believe that it's
all the holiday sampling! I just figure if I don't gain right now
during the holiday, i'm ok. I'll bump up the effort after Christmas.
I did get back on my treadmill this week (ok, just once--but I did it
anyway). I really need some motivation to go down to the cold garage
and turn on the space heater, let it warm up and then go back down to
use the treadmill. ANYONE want to send me daily "get off your butt"
emails--LOL! Yeah, like I sit on my butt all day and eat bon bons. I
think chasing a 3 year old around adn taking care of two special needs
kids takes a lot of the energy out of me. I watched the 3 year old on
Wed from 12-9:30, Thursday 8:30am-9:30pm, and Friday 8:30 am until 4 pm
on Saturday. I'm BEAT!!! and I have her again in the morning. At
least I have Christmas day off.
SO---I hope everyone has a WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS! OR whatever you
celebrate!

My Daughter

2008-02-06 17:32:02

Hi again,
My daughter is now moving to Seattle, WA instead of Montana. Her BF said he
can't get a job in MT and apparantly feels he can or has gotten one in WA.
She isn't moving until the end of January now. I am meeting her for dinner
tonight so hope to find out more info on her trip.
I feel really good about this trip and my new beginning.. I sort of wish I
could go now but will wait the additional week. I am meeting with the girls
after work on Wednesday so that should be fun. Christmas eve I was invited
to join my roommate and her family but she will be gone all night. I want
to go to a movie both Christmas eve and Christmas day if possible to take up
my time. I do not relish the idea of being alone but I think I will be
ok. Who knows, maybe I will go shopping lol.
Hope everyone has a safe and happy Holiday season...

Re: Monica

Joanne,
I had my surgery at Sacred Heart Hospital, Pensacola, FL on
12/12/2007. My surgeons are Dr. Jeffery Friedman and Dr. Jeffrey
Lord. I had the Lap RNY, with two hernia's also repaired.
Initially, I needed to lose approximately 99 pounds to get to my
goal... I weighed 239, I'm 5'7"... I did the 4 day liquid/clear diet
before surgery and the date of my surgery I weighed in at 225.
I walk each morning about a mile and it takes me a while, few little
twinges...... and I walk a mile each evening... The only thing I
cannot do is lift anything over 15 pounds for 45 days, no sit ups, no
weight lifting etc..... But I can get on my treadmill... I'm full of
energy now..... As of this morning..... I am down a total of 25
pounds and I am 11 days post op. I sit right at the 200lb mark as of
this morning.....
My daughter, who is 18, 5'4" had surgery 12/19/2007. She is 4 days
post op and is down 15.5 pounds as of this morning. She started out
at 240lbs, and this morning weighed 224.5. She is going for a walk
with me in a few minutes.....
We both stay hydrated.... I have unflavored Unjury, chocolate,
vanilla as well as chicken flavored..... Our protein shakes count as
our fluids.... I have set times for breakfast, lunch, dinner...
with fluids and/or shakes in between.... We each have about 2-4
ounces at each meal, i.e. cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, thin sliced
deli meats, cream chicken soup (protein powder added), mashed potates
with gravy (protein powder added). We eat SF popsicles, SF puddings,
applesauces..... I don't have the hungers.....
When my daughter was in the hospital this week, I went downstairs to
get something to eat from the cafeteria... The only thing that was
open was Wendy's. I ordered their baked potato with cheese....
After two -three bites, I was fully.. However, in about 10 minutes, I
could feel my heart pounding in my chest..... A form of dumping for
me.... My doctor explained it was the fat in the margarine and
cheese on the potato..... I watch my fat and sugar intake.... I
never consume more than 16g of sugar at any one time... I'm hardly
ever hungry and I have to remind myself to eat.....
So together, as of this morning, my daughter and I have lost a total
of 40.5 pounds together........ Our doctor told us this is normal
for the first couple of weeks, just stay hydrated..... 60 oz
water/60 g protein a day..... exercise 5 times a week, 30 minutes
each time.... no snacking or grazing between meals......
I absolutely love my surgeon's. There were a Godsend.
Monica

Hi Penny the last ultrasound after she got out of hospital was leaning
for a boy! but the baby was shy and they couldn't tell definitely.
Brittany wants a girl so that's what she insists the baby is, but the
rest of us feel boy! next appt in January and another ultrasound so
we'll see.
